As the New York Mets’ glowing icon Pete Alonso entered his walk year, discussions about his upcoming contract swiftly became a hot topic. Earlier, the 29-year-old star expressed his intention of being with the Mets for the rest of his career, but it turned out to be a one-sided affection as the team allowed him to approach the free agency market. Now, as he entered the walk year, speculation started emerging vehemently about his probable destinations in the upcoming season.

Needless to say, the Mets fans can move heaven and earth to keep Alonso bound with them, given his overall performance throughout his association with the team. During a Sunday morning interview with reporters in Port St. Lucie, Cohen revealed, “We haven’t had any discussions,” indicating unfavorable thoughts about the contract extension. He further added, “I think at this point, as far as for Pete, it’s best for him to have a great year and not be distracted. We know how to do this,” hinting about Alonso entering free agency.

Earlier, the team’s president of baseball operations, David Stearns, hinted about Pete entering free agency as well, stating, ” Entering his final year of club control, who happens to be represented by Scott Boras, these things generally end up into free agency.” Now, resonating with his tone, the team’s manager mentioned their wait until the season ends.

However, the team’s manager also emphasized on the fans’ preference, stating, “We know the fans feel strongly about him.” While prioritizing fans’ preference, he made the point clear that if Alonso can prove his affectability until the end of the season, he might give the thought a chance. Alonso, who ended up his previous season with 46 homers along with a career-low .217 batting average last year, is anticipated to hit at least 55 homers to be in the team, according to the team owner.

Where will Alonso possibly land in the upcoming season?

The upcoming deal holds immense significance in Alonso’s career as it may give the 29-year-old first baseman the biggest pocket to dive in. Thus, according to the prediction of MLB insider John Heyman, he is likely to claim a high-priced contract of $200 million after hitting the free agency market in 2025. But who has such bigger pockets to claim the first baseman with a record of a career-high .251 hits?

There isn’t only one team; rather multiples to pursue for him, except the New York Mets. The Mets franchise has a deeper pocket to spend over $300 million on the star, but they are not the only one. There are teams like Chicago Cubs who have a significant chance of signing Alonso if they don’t re-sign Cody Bellinger. Even if they sign Bellinger, there are still chances of them pursuing Pete, as Bellinger will garner their first base only and adding Alonso will ensure depth to the team.
