“The people asking me are thinking about it more than I am.” Pete Alonso remarked a few days ago. Over the course of the last seven years, the New York Mets have seen their first baseman earn the title of “home run king” while time and again being drawn into comparison with Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge. But now, home runs are the least talked about since the All-Star break. Because Queens is now more focused on whether David Stearns plans to meet his projected $174 million price tag.

Meanwhile, the New York Mets fan has ignited another debate. In Frank Fleming’s recent “Frank the Tank Pod,” he made a prediction that is already receiving a cold reception from fellow Mets fans.
Frank, the notorious Mets superfan, insisted, “@martinonyc goes, ‘the answer is to get rid of Pete Alonso.’ Mets fans might not want to hear this, but Mullins fits this team better.” In the name of Andy Martino, Frank is speculating that even if Pete Alonso is traded, Cedric Mullins would make a better fit for the team.

He has put Martino in the spot, implying that he’s positioned as a mouthpiece for the Mets’ ownership.
Frank (@NjTank99) makes predictions for next year:

So, even if such a move ever really happened, Martino would likely defend it as per Frank because he’s basically on the owners’ side. His remarks have received significant backlash already, and in fact, even Martino himself reposted Frank’s post.
David Stearns and Co. traded for Baltimore’s Cedric Mullins during the trade deadline. He entered as a lefty hitter with a strong glove and good speed in center. Mullins held a decent .738 OPS, 15 home runs, and 14 steals in 91 games.
Now, almost 2 months later, he is hitting around .191 for the Mets, not exactly an impressive performance. Just recently, manager Carlos Mendoza called him out after a failed attempt to hit a home run that helped the Nationals with a major lead.
The idea alone of Mullins fitting in with the Mets better than Alonso is not sitting well with the Metsies. But if not Mullins, there might be somebody else because it’s highly likely that it’s Pete Alonso’s last season in Queens.
Potential landing spots for Mets’ Pete Alonso
With the possibility of Pete Alonso heading to free agency, there are surely some big suitors for him this winter. The frontrunners, except for the Mets, are certainly the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees.
The Boston Red Sox are in dire need to upgrade their first baseman spot. Given that Tristan Casas is injured, the team needs a permanent and long-term fix instead of a temporary patch. That being the case, the Red Sox could very likely make a big splash in free agency.
However, money could be an issue. Sure, they would love to bring in Pete Alonso. But they’ve to prioritize Alex Bregman in free agency too. With that, it’s uncertain how much money they will be left with for Alonso. If the front office figures out how to make the money work for both, then for years to come, they will be the powerful team in the AL East.

The New York Yankees’ pursuit of Pete Alonso also makes sense. Apparently, veteran Paul Goldschmidt is heading to free agency this winter. So, Alonso could take over his spot. Then, Alonso could share the first base with Ben Rice, who would also play some games as a catcher. Plus, the Yankees shouldn’t have an issue meeting his projected $174 million price tag to upgrade their first base.
So, what do you think will happen this winter? Any speculations?
