Derek Jeter left a significant legacy after playing for 20 years in Major League Baseball. The former New York Yankees captain has many titles to his name and gave a noteworthy performance whenever he stepped onto the field. He was a part of the Pinstripes for his entire career, and the two names were synonymous at one point.

After retiring from the game in 2014, Jeter stayed off the playing field. But then in September 2017, the former shortstop purchased a four percent stake with Bruce Sherman in the Miami Marlins. It was a move that many questioned because the team had been struggling lately, without a postseason appearance since 2003.

There was no shortage of haters for Derek Jeter

Despite some noticeable changes in the team after Jeter took over, there were, of course, many who were dissatisfied. There was no dearth of people questioning Jeter. However, the former Yankee didn’t let any doubters stop him. In fact, he welcomed the cynicism.

“I love to be doubted. I’ve been doubted a lot of times in my career and you know, I think it’s how you handle that. People automatically assume you’re gonna lose and I think that’s the wrong mindset. Give us an opportunity,” said Jeter in an interview with ESPN.

Throughout his baseball career, Jeter has been known for this competitiveness. In fact, the former shortstop has himself commented on his obsession to win, no matter what. It was exactly this mindset that brought him to the business side of baseball.

Jeter put in his all to improve the Miami Marlins

Taking a page out of the Yankees’ playbook, Jeter created a team where winning was as important as an improvement in performance. He even moved his family from Tampa Bay to Miami and learned Spanish, ready to make the Marlins a bigger name.

But after all his efforts to surpass previous records, Jeter ultimately stepped down from the Marlins in 2022. Citing the reason as a difference in vision between him and Sherman, he shocked the baseball world once again.

As for what next, and whether he will go back to the business side of baseball, who knows what can happen?
