Being one of the rarest players who remained loyal throughout his career, a recent tweet by Adam Wainwright showcased his loyalty towards his pet. In a world where players retire either due to age or to prioritize their families, Adam’s reason for hanging up his cleats was adorable.

The tweet read, “People keep asking me if I’m officially retired. Well, here is my official retirement paperwork that we turned in to the @Cardinalsand @MLBPA. Retired? Absolutely, for all the best reasons. Will send more later. Love y’all.”

The reason that he mentioned in the MLB-Notice of Disposition was “because I got a puppy! And that moved something in everyone who came across his “best reasons” for retirement.

Wondering how a puppy came into the picture? Well, Wainwright pinky-promised his kids that he would get a family dog following his baseball retirement. On October 1, the Cardinals honored him with a Lagotto Romagnolo puppy in a ceremony held prior to their last home game of the season. He made his departure a rather memorable one, not only for MLB, but also for his children. Also, Adam’s wife Jenny gave their new pooch a cute name, Louie!

The 42-year-old’s career spanned across eighteen major league seasons. Wainwright was 200–128 with a 3.53 ERA during his time with the Cardinals. That said, St. Louis wrapped up the era earnestly for Uncle Charlie.
