Derek Jeter is a name from the baseball world that would ring too many bells. He is the face that anyone could recognize from many miles away in the crowd. But he was never the one to boast about his popularity status. So back in the day, Jeter used a popular fictional character’s name from a famous television series, as an alias.

Jeter accomplished feats and achieved milestones to the point that his legendary status took an iconic image. But contrary to his high-profile identity in the playground, he rather maintained a low-key profile. While most celebrity athletes utilized their professional‌ prowess for profitable effect in public, Jeter went in the opposite direction. It was almost as if Jeter didn’t want to get recognized.

When Jeter was still active as a player, visiting hotels was understandably a norm. He did so by using a disguised name as his alias. Jeter thus became ‘Johnny Drama’ from the HBO televised series, ‘Entourage’.

When Derek Jeter became Johnny Drama

As it seems likely, Derek Jeter had a penchant for theatricality even outside his field of play. So he went by as a popular television show character, instead of being himself. Since his social stature was way too big to hide under a disguise. On the other hand, ‘Entourage’, the show, was at the peak of its popularity in the 2000s.

Many iconic MLB and NBA stars made their appearance on the show from time to time. Jeter never appeared on the show, but still remained a follower. Therefore, he used the name, ‘Johnny Drama’, upon checking in at hotels. Jeter once famously went as ‘Johnny Drama’, when he visited a Seattle Hotel with a group of his teammates.

Another famous occasion when Derek Jeter took an alias

Jeter didn’t go incognito in hotels alone. Back in 2013, while Jeter was on the injured list, he went to a Starbucks joint, and ordered his coffee as ‘Philip’. However, it’s still a mystery whether Jeter actually ordered that cup with the disguised name.
