Do you know the latest team rankings in MLB? As per ESPN, the Phillies are ranked #6 in the top 10 lineups. This has raised more than a few eyebrows in Philadelphia. Because the Phillies seem to be inconsistent at times and vulnerable in the first half of the season.

Amid this chatter, the Phillies front office is rumored to be working on bolstering the lineup further. Speculations are gaining momentum that they are exploring bold options. A potential blockbuster deal with the Diamondbacks that could bring a dynamic duo to Citizens Bank Park!

“The Phillies have had discussions about adding both Diamondbacks P Shelby Miller & 3B Eugenio Suarez in a package involving Mick Abel + more,” dugoutforever shared on their official Instagram handle.

Shelby Miller, the veteran right-hander from the Diamondbacks, has quietly turned into a hot trade target this season. With a 2.10 ERA and solid strikeout numbers (39), the 34-year-old is showing signs of a late-career resurgence. He’s also on a budget-friendly deal, under $1 million, which makes him an attractive bullpen piece for the Phillies, who already have some big arms like Jordan Romano and Matt Strahm in the mix.

On the other hand, if the Phillies are looking to add some real power to their lineup, Eugenio Suarez could be their guy. The D-backs third baseman is having a monster year, leading the NL with 69 RBIs and 26 homers. But he won’t come cheap, though, as Suarez is locked into a 7-year, $66 million contract.

While Miller is certain to get traded by the Diamondbacks, considering he will hit free agency by this year, it is unlikely that Suarez will come easily. And if we go by the rumors, the Yankees have also pitched the option to trade for Suarez. So, the D-Backs have a few options to check. For the Phillies, they need to keep an eye on how the D-Backs are performing.

Currently, the D-Backs are placed 4th with a 43-42 record, with a playoff dream still alive. The trade deadline is still a month away. And if the D-Backs stay away from playoff contention, the Phillies could make a bet.

What’s your perspective on:

Are the Phillies risking too much by trading top prospect Mick Abel for a quick fix?

It is also reported that the Phillies are considering Mike Abel and more names to trade for Miller and Suarez. While the other names are not yet reported, Abel is a leading prospect. Since his debut in May, he threw six scoreless innings, striking out nine batters with no walks. Moreover, Abel is now only the second pitcher after Curt Simmons to have the most strikeouts in a debut since 1901.

Now, when the Phillies are planning to trade their top prospect along with a few more, it shows the desperation to bolster the lineup. But why?

The Phillies’ lineup gaps demand urgent fix-ups

Currently ranked 10th in terms of average (.254) and 11th in terms of total runs (390), the Phillies’ offense in 2025 has shown potential but remains frustratingly inconsistent.

In the hot corner, Alec Bohm has been the everyday man. His production has been steady, batting around .280 with modest power and league-average defense. While that’s not bad, for a team aiming for a deep postseason run, it’s kinda moderate. The addition of a new name like Suarez, their hitting lineup would surely get strengthened. With 26 home runs and 69 RBI, Suarez will bring the firepower the Phillies desperately need.

On the other hand, external help is needed in the Phillies’ bullpen as well. Once considered a strength, the relief corps has regressed significantly, with a collective ERA hovering around 5.00.

Moreover, the Phillies’ bullpen is served with a few off-field blows. A major blow came when closer Jose Alvarado was hit with an 80-game suspension for PED use. It has left the bullpen without its most reliable arm. In his absence, Matt Strahm has been asked to carry a heavier load, but even he has been shaky at times (3.78 ERA). Furthermore, Jordan Romano landed last offseason, but with a 7.28 ERA, he is clearly struggling on the mound.

Nevertheless, the Phillies are currently leading the division, and they cannot afford to slip from the pole. For that, additional reinforcements are required. And while the duo of Miller and Suarez could be effective, it would be worth watching which names the Phillies are offering in exchange.
