You know what’s baffling? The fact that Pete Alonso is still unsigned. But that not be true after all as a team has emerged as a possible landing spot. Have you heard of the Toronto Blue jays? Of Course you have. They have been almost in every big player’s sweepstakes. Be it Shohei Ohtani, Juan Soto or the most recent one, Roki Sasaki. Unfortunately the team failed to land any of them.

So of course the squad is pivoting to the next best players like Pete Alonso and Alex Bregman. While rumors of Bregman getting signed by the club are less, insiders think that Scott Boras’ client Alonso has a better chance. While the Blue Jays are still declining how to add Pete Alonso to the mix, they have made their move for a power bat, signing outfielder Anthony Santander to a five-year, $92.5 million deal.

Could the Blue Jays swing this signing after so many failures

While this big splash might suggest Toronto is out on Pete Alonso, TSN’s Scott Mitchell reports that an Alonso signing is “still in play.” So, the Jays might not be done adding firepower just yet. The Blue Jays may already have Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at first base, but his experience at third and the flexibility of the DH spot make a Pete Alonso signing a real possibility. More importantly, Guerrero’s looming free agency after the 2025 season adds another layer to the equation.

If Toronto isn’t confident in locking up their four-time All-Star long-term, Alonso could serve as a potential replacement, with the team possibly looking to trade Guerrero and recoup value before he walks.  After missing out on stars like Juan Soto, Roki Sasaki, and Corbin Burnes, and falling short in their pursuit of Shohei Ohtani, landing Alonso would not only solidify their future but also send a strong message that the Blue Jays are still serious players in free agency. While that deal is a long way from being a done deal, the Santander deal is nothing but that.

Anthony Santander is heading north of the border

The former Baltimore Orioles slugger has agreed to a deal with the Toronto Blue Jays, per MLB Network’s Jon Morosi. According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the contract is a five-year pact worth more than $92.5 million. Santander brings much-needed power to the Blue Jays lineup, adding a proven bat that can make an immediate impact in the AL East.

What’s your perspective on:

Can the Blue Jays finally land a big fish in Pete Alonso, or is it another miss?

Have an interesting take?

Santander’s journey from a first-time All-Star and Silver Slugger in 2024 to a key piece in the Blue Jays’ high-octane lineup is one of those moves that could shake up the AL East. Hitting .235 with 44 homers, 102 RBI, and a .814 OPS, Santander cemented himself as one of the more dangerous sluggers in the American League, and with the Orioles’ postseason hopes falling short the past two years, the writing was on the wall: they might lose him.

Having crushed 33 homers in 2022 and 28 in 2023, Santander quickly became one of the most coveted potential consolation prizes for teams who missed out on the likes of Juan Soto. For the Orioles, it was a reality they’d prepared for, knowing they’d likely face life without their biggest bat. Santander’s departure marks the end of an era for the O’s, who had made the postseason in back-to-back years but failed to get over the playoff hump. But for the Blue Jays, the timing couldn’t be better. After a hectic offseason addressing both offense and bullpen needs.
