The overstretched free agency of Jordan Montgomery has succeeded in one thing – giving hope to every team regarding their chances. In the offseason, he was expected to have a good market but one still waits for something concrete to happen. But unsurprisingly, the market is still robust for Monty, maybe even more so than another Scott Boras client – Blake Snell. Now another team might be staking their claims on the World Series champion.

St. Louis Cardinals have an in-depth experience with Monty. After all, they were the ones who traded for the pitcher from the Pinstripes. While his stay was merely two years, if reports are to be believed, a reunion could be on the Cards here.

Are The Cards falling for Jordan Montgomery?

While Montgomery’s time with the Cardinals wasn’t as rewarding as the Texas Rangers, he did show a glimpse of what he could do. In his two years with the team, Monty had a 12-12 record with a 3.31 ERA. Montgomery’s impending free agency cut short his union with the Red Birds. But St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Ben Frederickson reported that the Cardinals might go for Montgomery this offseason.

Pointing out how money isn’t an issue for the Cardinals, Frederickson said, “The Cardinals can afford big deals for the right guys. They did for Sonny Gray. They could for Montgomery.” But his primary reason to believe that the Cards should go in for Monty was just how beneficial the pitcher would be for the team.

The Cardinals already know what Monty is capable of. Above all, he suits their style or prioritizing pitchers with high starts. After all, since 2022 only 24 pitchers have started over 20 innings – Montgomery is one of them. So this immediately creates a great fit for the Red Birds.

However, is Montgomery interested in joining the Cardinals? Agent Scott Boras has already answered this question.

Is there mutual attraction here?

Earlier in the offseason, Scott Boras talked to the St. Louis Cardinals’ president John Mozeliak. While this raised hopes, it was the comments of Boras during the Winter Meetings that confirmed everyone’s doubts. “Certainly we let him know that we were open to the idea,” the super agent said regarding the Cardinals – Montgomery links.

So it looks like there’s some smoke here. If there’s smoke, there’s probably a fire too. With the Spring Training nearing, we’ll know for sure whether this was actually a fire or was it just a false fire alarm.
