Toronto Blue Jays have lured outfielder Anthony Santander to a five-year pact to address one of their major needs this offseason. This deal remains unconfirmed on the part of the team, but it is indeed a very important move in the enhancement of their already solid offense. Santander has been a target of the Blue Jays and is probably the kind of power the lineup needs, which already features solid contributors.

The 30-year-old comes off a 44-homer showing with the Baltimore Orioles, showcasing his ability to produce offense consistently. In the last few seasons, his power numbers have remained strong, with 28 and 33 homers in those two years. Santander’s ability to impart pop into Toronto’s batting order fills a very big hole and makes Toronto’s contact-heavy lineup even more intimidating. This move makes the Blue Jays crystal clear about their intentions to build up the depth of their offense as well as their competitiveness throughout the upcoming seasons.

Power and flexibility- Santander’s impact on Toronto’s lineup and future

The deal is worth $92.5 million, with a six-year stick-to-end option extended to $110 million with an opt-out and escalator option. This gives the Blue Jays both value right away and flexibility over the future, particularly after having lost some household names to trades and free agency like Juan Soto and Shohei Ohtani earlier in the offseason. With his power, Santander fits what the Blue Jays are trying to do to bolster their roster.

What does make this deal more appetizing is his amazing contact rates. While Teoscar Hernández was another possible fit, Santander is a switch-hitter, offering much-needed lefty balance in a lineup otherwise right-hand-heavy in Toronto. His bat fits the Blue Jays’ hitting philosophy like glove and hand; one can clearly tell the team is after a player like him in MLB. A tweet was shared suggesting that signing Alex Bregman would require the Blue Jays to exceed the third CBT threshold of $281 million.

Again, the fit for Santander on defense is a little trickier. Initially a Right-fielder with the Orioles, his defense in that position hasn’t been stellar, which also makes it less pressing of an issue with George Springer confirmed for two more seasons. Santander has also dabbled in left field, and with Joey Loperfido and Davis Schneider leading the charge in that direction right now, there is potential for Santander to step in as a fill-in batting option, especially since Toronto continues to broadcast a DH vacancy.

Santander’s signing sparks hope for Blue Jays’ future

Financially, this works for Blue Jays, taking into consideration that within one or two years from now, some of their deals should come off the books. Looking to the future in their competitive plans, Santander gives them a hard-nosed veteran around which they can grow, as they continue to develop young players. Having heard that the team missed big targets like Shohei Ohtani, Juan Soto, and Corbin Burnes, then missing out in their pursuit of Japanese star Roki Sasaki, this opening brings relief to a fanbase that has endured all.

On the other hand, since Santander rejected the Orioles’ qualifying offer, they’ll get a pick after round one during the 2025 MLB Draft in return. As a result, the Blue Jays will concede the second pick in the upcoming MLB Draft and forfeit $500,000 from their international bonus pool; however, it appears worth that price considering what Santander has to bring.

This isn’t the final addition to the roster for the Blue Jays this offseason. While the addition of Santander does give a shot in the arm to a struggling base, there’s no denying the work is far from over. The Blue Jays could use another offensive piece, a high-end reliever, and a solid starting pitcher to round out their rotation. For now, though, the signing of Santander is a step in the right direction that instills a little hope in everyone. The future looks brighter for the Blue Jays, and for sure, the organization is far from done.
