Following a brief run with Miami, Sandy Alcantara has decided to test the free agency market. The Miami Marlins are in quite an interesting spot right now. There’s plenty of talent on the roster, and it’s only improving. Kyle Stowers looks like a potential superstar in the outfield, while Sandy Alcántara could return to ace form if he bounces back to his 2022 level next season. But can the Marlins really count on Alcántara staying? With the recent update, he could very well have one foot outside the door.

As per Jim Riley of Ballcap Sports, the Miami Marlins’ $56 million ace’s new home could be Boston.
“We will start with Sandy Alcantara, who was not traded at the July deadline, so he’s got to get traded this winter, right? I’m feeling pretty confident about this.” Riley said.

Further, he added, “Even though Miami was kind of good last year, maybe you could make a case for them keeping the rotation together and seeing what they could build on. But the dollars are high. The years are running out, so I think Sandy is still a goner, and there are a lot of teams, a lot of teams that will only add to the chance of him getting traded, that are going to be looking for starting pitching this offseason. Which one do I think lands Sandy Alcantara? I believe it will be the Boston Red Sox.”

The Red Sox could pair Alcantara at the top of the rotation with Garrett Crochet. The Boston Red Sox will look to bring in some veteran talent to help them make a deeper playoff run next season. And as we’ve seen, one of the biggest keys to that is having an elite starting rotation. And clearly, that’s something they could start building by adding Sandy Alcántara.

As the 2025 campaign moved along, Alcantara did start to look more and more like the award-winning version of himself. Across his final 12 starts of the season, he had a 3.13 ERA across 77.2 innings, giving the kind of length that had been commonplace for him a few years ago.
But if the Red Sox have no limit on their budget, then they might be able to land him.

Meanwhile, this offseason, the Marlins are expected to continue leaning into their rebuild, which likely means more selling. Players like Sandy Alcántara and Kyle Stowers could find themselves on the trade block as Miami looks to bring in additional young talent. On another note, besides Boston, there’s another club where Sandy would fit right in.
The Blue Jays could also be in the mix for Marlins’ star pitcher
Fresh off their American League pennant, the Toronto Blue Jays are heading into an offseason full of tough decisions. Several key players are set to hit free agency, with shortstop Bo Bichette leading the list.

While re-signing Bichette will likely be their top priority, the front office also has other needs to address. The starting rotation, in particular, could use a boost. Largely because both Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt are entering free agency.
That’s a big reason why Mike Axisa of CBS Sports listed the Toronto Blue Jays as a potential landing spot for Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcántara.
“The affordable contract and two-year terms mean just about every team other than deep rebuilders will have interest in Alcantara. The Blue Jays and Braves would be wise to give the Marlins a call,” he wrote.

Toronto’s offseason is already off to a strong start with Shane Bieber opting into his player option for the 2026 season. He’ll join Trey Yesavage, José Berríos, and Kevin Gausman in the rotation. Although the team could still use one more dependable arm.
Adding Alcántara would make the Blue Jays’ rotation one of the best in baseball. The 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner hasn’t quite returned to peak form after Tommy John surgery and missing the entire 2024 season, but his upside remains undeniable.
