The Milwaukee Brewers had been the hottest team across the league before hitting a brief slump against the Chicago Cubs. After dropping three of five games, snapping a streak of six straight series wins, the Brewers finished their Chicago trip with a solid win on Thursday. They returned home for a three-game set against the visiting San Francisco Giants, aiming to get their winning streak rolling again.

Friday’s 5-4 dominant win over the Giants only grew their optimism. However, they were handed a 7-1 loss on Saturday after their silly miscues proved to be costly. The Brewers went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

During the second inning, they did secure a 1-0 lead when Jake Bauers was hit by a pitch and later scored on an RBI double from Caleb Durbin, who broke out of an 0-for-12 slump with the hit into the right-center field gap.

On the other hand, Freddy Peralta walked three of the first seven Giants batters he faced; clearly, he struggled with his command. Moreover, his pitch count piled up quickly—85 through four innings and 96 by the end of the fifth inning. He still somehow managed to exit the game allowing two hits and four walks, with six strikeouts over five scoreless innings.

The winning odds further slipped out of the Brewers’ reach when Grant Anderson (2-5) faltered in the sixth inning. He allowed the Giants to capitalize on a pair of errors.

After Willy Adames got on base as shortstop Andruw Monasterio made a bad throw, Dominic Smith hit a single. Then Casey Schmitt tied the game with a double that brought in a run. Things got worse when third baseman Anthony Seigler mishandled a ground ball from Luis Matos, allowing two more runs to score.

Meanwhile, Logan Webb struck out five to improve his record to 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA in seven career starts against the Milwaukee Brewers. From the seventh inning until the end, the Giants piled on more damage. And ultimately what ended up drawing the sharpest scrutiny was Anderson’s outing and, more importantly, the way the Brewers let the game slip away.

Fans erupt after Brewers’ costly loss

After costly errors, missed opportunities at the plate, and Grant Anderson’s poor outing, the MLB fans were quick to make their disappointment loud and clear. A fan summed up what many felt after Saturday night: “Disappointed. Anderson fails and our entire offense can’t score, even if their lives depend on it.” Apparently, Anderson allowed three runs in the sixth inning following errors by Andruw Monasterio and Anthony Seigler. Meanwhile, their offense also gave up as they couldn’t capitalize with runners in scoring position, going 0-for-7.

Another fan voiced the frustration, “Grant Anderson should never pitch for this team again. Siegler and Bauers are not major league material.” This season, across 57 games, Anderson has compiled a record of 2–5 with a 2.87 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 62.2 innings pitched. Meanwhile, Seigler has been inconsistent lately. Largely because he is navigating limited playing time at third base, where he is currently losing starts to Caleb Durbin. Plus, Jake Bauers has also struggled offensively all season. He is hitting just .194 with limited impact. Combined, their performances fueled fan frustration and calls for accountability.

Some called the game a “shame show in Milwaukee tonight 👎 Brewers ML❌❌❌.” It’s their combination of defensive errors and bullpen issues that contributed to their 7-1 loss to the Giants. The loss ended the Brewers’ seven-game home winning streak.

Others simply lost their belief in the team. “Yeah brewers def getting eliminated in the first round.” The Brewers do hold a stunning record. They are currently 81-49, while holding a commanding 7.0 game lead over the second-place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central division. Yet, the doubts are lingering given their playoff history. Since 2018, they have lost five consecutive playoff series.

For a squad that had built momentum with six straight series wins before stumbling, Saturday’s loss was purely disappointing. “This team is collapsing.” Well, that would be an overexaggeration. The Brewers are simply facing challenges that could impact their pursuit of the No. 1 seed in the National League.
