When one of the sport’s biggest stars makes an announcement, you stop and listen. That’s exactly what happened. On April 19th, Dodgers’ star Shohei Ohtani and his wife, Mamiko, officially embarked on the journey of parenthood after welcoming their first child, a baby girl. That same day, Ohtani took to his social media to express his unmatched joy. “I am so grateful to my loving wife, who gave birth to our healthy, beautiful daughter. To my daughter, thank you for making us very nervous yet super anxious parents.” And just like that, the league and beyond couldn’t contain their excitement for their MVP becoming a girl dad.

The Los Angeles Dodgers were just as overwhelmed. “Baby Ohtani has arrived,” they noted on X. These cheers haven’t stopped since then. Just some time ago, manager Dave Roberts gifted a pink toy Porsche to Ohtani for his daughter. It was a part of their ongoing car-related pranks. But Ohtani, being Ohtani, was delighted by Roberts’ gesture.

Speaking of gesture, on Friday morning, Ohtani received a massive, meticulously curated pink baby girl hamper from the Los Angeles Lakers.

It featured a mini Lakers basketball, many adorable toys, a beanie, and other baby essentials—most of them bearing the Lakers’ logo. It seemed like the Lakers wanted Ohtani’s daughter to be surrounded by purple and gold. It’s no surprise. Ohtani’s post when his daughter’s birth was announced, the baseball star thanked his team. “I would also like to thank the Dodgers organization, my teammates, and the fans for their constant support and kind words of encouragement.”

Well, is it coincidental that all of these adorable goodies came in amidst the ongoing Dodgers’ owner’s NBA move? Maybe or maybe not. However, the word out there is that Dodgers’ longtime owner Mark Walter is set to own the majority of the NBA.

For the record, Walter has spent 13 years making the Dodgers a powerhouse of major league baseball. He has been a stakeholder in the Lakers since 2021. He purchased his share of 26% from Phil Anschutz back then. Across Los Angeles, his recruitment talks are taking over the city.

For Lakers’ nation, in particular, this is going to be a massive shift. After all, they have witnessed decades of ownership under the Buss family.

That very year, Dr. Jerry Buss was the first to purchase the team. Under his control, the Lakers were in pretty good shape. They stacked multiple championship wins and built a legacy across the world of the NBA. Apparently, the league’s financial requirements are at a boom. So, consequently, the Buss Family won’t be able to have enough resources to keep up the pace.

Walter’s acquisition could offer a better structure, resources, and strategies that the team requires right now. The Lakers were never owned by a large corporation, the way many other teams are owned.

It was a real business for the Buss family. Walter’s majority ownership will also bring changes like front office decisions, everyday operations, and much more. His track record with the Los Angeles Dodgers has been great. Now, it will be worth watching closely how it all goes for him with the Lakers.
