“Left So Much Joy Behind…” – NBA Legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Remembers Broadcasting Royalty Vin Scully After His Passing at 94

Legendary basketball icon Kareem Abdul-Jabbar joined the long list of sporting legends paying tribute to Vin Scully. Various elite athletes mourned Scully’s death. Scully was an iconic voice primarily broadcasting the Los Angeles Dodgers games. 

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is a retired basketball legend who played 20 NBA seasons. He is a 19-time NBA All-Star and six-time NBA Champion who played for the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers, respectively. Vin Scully was a legendary broadcaster who became the baseball commentator for the Dodgers games. Scully also broadcasted NFL and PGA tour games.

He covered Dodgers games from 1950 until announcing his retirement in 2016. Notably, Scully broadcasted on a record total of 67 MLB seasons. Vin passed away on 2nd August 2022 at the age of 94. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar joined the American sports community in paying his tributes to Scully through social media.

Following the death of Vin Scully, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar put forward his condolences to the golden voice for the Dodgers. But Kareem focused more on the happiness that Scully had spread throughout his living days. Kareem paid his tribute, highlighting the entertainment that Scully provided.

Kareem mentioned his fondness for the Dodgers. Expressing his support, Kareem explained how Scully was instrumental in Kareem becoming a Dodgers fan. Kareem wanted the public to remember the joy that Scully had gifted to the sports lovers.

Speaking on Scully, Kareem quoted, “Hey Dodger Nation, this is Kareem. Like the rest of Dodger Nation, I am sad at Vin Scully’s passing. But I can only be so sad because he left so much joy behind. Starting in 1955 when I rooted the Dodgers to their very first World Series Championship. Until just recently, two years ago, when Vin’s finally returned.”

Kareem added, “We’re gonna miss him. But I am always gonna be a big fan of Dodger Blue and Vin Scully was a big part of that. I thank him for his gift to my life and to all the Dodger fans, Go Blue!!!!”  

Vin Scully’s impact on the sport 

The significant contributions of Vin Scully got recognition from not just the Dodgers family but the entire baseball community and beyond. Broadcasting American Football and Golf games from 1975 to 1982, Scully’s popularity reached far beyond the baseball fan base. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s words of tribute are proof of the testimony.
