Derek Jeter is one of the greatest players of all time and a legend of the game. No doubt about that! But even Jeter had to start his baseball career in the minor league, as most MLB prospects do. Notably, he was drafted by the Yankees in 1992 and played in the Minors till 1996. And of those years, 1994 was a big one for the future Yankee.

That is because he won one of the most prestigious awards that a minor league player can win. Furthermore, in 94, Jeter met one of his closest friends and an NBA legend while playing in the Minors. And the most interesting part is how Jeter got to meet the NBA legend.

Derek Jeter won Minor League Player of the Year in 1994 and also met Michael Jordan for the first time

In 1994, Derek Jeter won Minor League Player of the Year for his fantastic performances. A picture of him holding the same trophy was recently shared by Baseball in Pics on Facebook. They shared the image of Jeter and said “Derek Jeter accepts his trophy for Baseball America’s minor league player of the year, 1994”.

He was also named Minor League Player of the Year by The Sporting News and Topps/NAPBL that year. But that wasn’t all that happened for Jeter in 1994. He also met his good friend and NBA Legend Michael Jordan while playing in the Arizona Fall League that year. The two were playing a game against each other when Jordan said hi to Jeter. The friendship which started at that time is still going strong after 25 years.

The MLB Hall of Famer considers Jordan the greatest basketball player of all time. At times, Jeter has even said that Jordan is like his elder brother. Notably, the NBA superstar helped mentor him and guide him through being a star athlete.

Jeter once admitted that after meeting Jordan for the first time, the NBA Star looked out for him. He said that he learned how to handle himself both on and off the field from Jordan. Furthermore, he has also said that he goes to MJ for advice on a variety of things.
