The New York Mets are struggling from all fronts right now. And it seems like their troubles are only going to grow with recent developments. Despite having one of the biggest payrolls in the entire league, the 2023 season has not been going well so far. One major achievement for the franchise is that first baseman Pete Alonso currently leads the MLB home run chart at 22. He has been a major cog in the offensive wheel of the team, but not anymore.

In a recent game against their division rivals, the Atlanta Braves, Alonso got hit by a pitch off of Charlie Morton on his left hand. X-Rays showed no severe damage from the 96.5 mph fastball at first and the 28-year-old was listed day-to-day. Now, however, things have changed and fans are not happy.

Pete Alonso is headed to the injured list

A lineup that has already struggled with the offense this season is going to have a major player missing in action. The Mets announced that Alonso will be on the 10-day IL. Alonso has a bone bruise and sprain in his wrist and is expected to miss the next 3-4 weeks. The injury only became clearer after he flew back to New York to get a more thorough checkup.

In his absence, Mark Canha came to the plate against the Braves, but the club announced some new additions to the roster as well. Infielder Luis Guillorme, designated right-hander Stephen Nogosek, and left-hander Zach Muckenhirn have been called up for assignment.

New York Mets fans are in disbelief over the situation

Pete Alonso has historically proven to be a tough player. The only time he has been on the injured list since his debut in 2019 was in May 2021. He took a pitch to his right hand and had to take a minimum of 10 days off. The Mets have been relying on him and fans have come to expect a good performance. However, they fear what kind of team Alonso will come back to.
