Luisangel Acuna is back! But this time, the pressure is dialed to eleven! Just ahead of Thursday’s doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles, the New York Mets made a move that has flipped the script a little.

The 23-year-old infielder is returning to the big league, and it was first reported by the New York Post’s Jon Heyman. Acuna is being recalled from the Triple-A Syracuse, and veteran outfielder Travis Jankowski has also been designated for assignment.

This is not just another roster maintenance; it’s a rare occurrence. But really, Acuna’s 2025 season has been a tale of two halves. In April, he looked like the Mets’ next rising star; he won NL Rookie of the Month after batting .288 with an eye-watering speed, and the smooth defense was what everyone could talk about. However, as May and June arrived, so did the struggles.

Acuna’s bat went cold as ice, and his OPS dipped to .452, and the once fiery player was told to pack up and head to Syracuse on June 23. But even then, Acuna did not sulk; he simply worked on himself. Over 12 games in Triple-A, he hit .289 with four steals and nine runs scored. He proved that he was not done yet. Now, less than a month later, he is getting another crack, and this time the stakes are pretty high. Because just hours back, the New York Mets pulled off the biggest comeback of the season.

They were down 6-2 in the eighth to the Orioles, but then the Mets exploded. Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso took turns hitting two-run homers. Edwin Diaz also pitched a flawless ninth. Juan Soto drove in a go-ahead run in the tenth. Then Huascar Brazoban locked it down, and so the final score was 7-6! And now with the momentum, the Mets are turning to Acuna to make a difference. And the fans are very skeptical about the second shot that Acuna has got.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Acuna the spark the Mets need, or just another gamble in a high-stakes season?

Have an interesting take?

Fans are unhappy with the sudden decision by the New York Mets

One fan didn’t hold back, saying, “Hopefully it continues to bring losses.” And honestly, the skepticism is not unwarranted. Luisangel Acuna struggled mightily before being sent to Triple-A, like he didn’t light the world on fire. But despite that rough stretch, manager Carlos Mendoza is putting his faith in him, saying, “It’s time for him to be back up here and continue to help us win baseball games.” And maybe with his speed and versatility, the Mets are giving Acuna another shot. Now it depends on whether he will use the opportunity in the best way possible.

“He has no power,” one fan wrote bluntly. And most feel that while he might not have power, the team shouldn’t trade Luisangel Acuna for Edward Cabrera. Well, firstly, sure, Acuna might have struggled in his first stint in the majors, but he is 23 years old, and his speed and versatility give him loads of potential. Trading him for a pitcher like Cabrera, who has only found consistency now after years of command issues, feels like a risk at best. Sure, he is on a tear now, but his ERA was 4.49 before this stretch.

“Who’s going down?” is what fans are asking as Acuna returns. Because while teams call up relievers as the 27th man, their presence suggests something bigger. Maybe an IL stint or even a trade. Meanwhile, this just seems to be the start of a bigger shakeup. Because with Jeff McNeil playing both second and outfield, due to Tyron Taylor’s struggles, roster flexibility is clearly in play. Rumors are already coming about a trade for someone like Will Castro, who can cover many spots. So a lot seems to be happening before the deadline.

One fan admitted, ‘I can’t even believe it,” and they are not alone. Luisangel Acuna’s sudden return raises eyebrows. Is he just a stopgap until Starling Marte is back? Or is there something more going on? Acuna spent 17 days in the minors; three more and he would have lost an option year. The timing feels suspicious. Does it not? Plus, his debut last September was red-hot with three homers! Now, the Mets have not said an inkling about who has been sent down, but it feels like a calculated roster play.

One fan speculated, “Could be playing Lindor at DH in one of the games.” And it actually makes a lot of sense. With a doubleheader on deck, the Mets might want to give Lindor some breathing room. So slotting Acuna in can give Lindor that rest, and it also gives Acuna a chance to flash some of his value. The trade deadline is coming soon—just weeks left now, so if not parade Acuna’s potential now, then when? So this call-up could be more than just a fill-in role.
