2024’s major theme is turning out to be the rise of the new-age New York Yankees. Similar to the 2016 Baby Bombers generation, the 2023-24 season saw multiple prospects make their debut. While some excelled beyond belief, a few faltered. But Austin Wells was one prospect that received a mixed reaction.

Despite what many may say, 2023 was not all negative for the Yankees. It gave youth an opportunity. It is not common for so many prospects to get their call-ups in such a short period, but the desperation of the Bombers made it possible. But that was 2023 and now it’s 2024, and there is no such desperation. Now it’s up to the rookies to prove their mettle. Luckily for Wells – he’s readier than ever for such adversities. 

New York Yankees top prospect’s aware of his situation 

Wells’ 2023 was a classic case of a cold start but a hot finish. After his first 8 games saw him bat at just  .103, things looked shaky. But then in his last 11 games, the catcher hit 4 home runs at a .317 average. In an interview with The Athletic, Wells noted how that experience helped him, “I’ve definitely taken the confidence from the successes from last year and the things that I needed to learn and implemented them into my offseason program.” 

So is he ready for 2024? Well, if one goes by what the Yankees skipper Aaron Boone has said, the signs look good. “He’s continuing to make really good strides this winter to put himself in a position to compete for that (roster spot).” Boone was confident that Wells would eventually become a good hitter as well. 

However, there was one issue with Wells that affected his standing with the team – his defensive abilities. His below-average arm strength and blocking abilities gave mixed signals regarding his applicability as the Yankees’ catcher. Despite other positives, this could reduce his chances due to there being no shortage of catchers in the Bombers squad.

Fortunately, Wells has identified this massive issue and is actively working with the coach on this. 

Austin Wells pays special attention to his defense

“We had a big focus on throwing and I feel like I’m in a great spot with my arm and it’s the best it’s felt and the strongest it’s been. So, I’m looking forward to seeing how it translates to a game,” Wells said regarding his defensive training. Despite his throwing speed averaging 80.6 mph, the Yankees prospect is aiming to increase the power in his hands. 

So with Wells’ training continuing in full throttle, the Yankees certainly have a tough decision to make. Do they take the chance on a rookie or do they continue with what they had last season? They have a whole month to make that choice.
