In dark days, even a flicker looks like the sun. Clarke Schmidt was that flicker last season for the New York Yankees. In a squad that was decimated with injuries and loss of form, Schmidt stood as a firm support for their ace Gerrit Cole. Victim of the topsy-turvy Yankees’ season himself, the pitcher nevertheless completed the first full season of his career as a starter. So is it a surprise that GM Brian Cashman is so high on him?

Even though it was Carlos Rodon who was brought in as the number two, Schmidt was the one who played that role in 2023. But with a healthy Rodon and the new arrival of Marcus Stroman, Schmidt’s position was becoming doubtful. While one wondered whether he’d be able to keep a spot or not, Brian Cashman’s recent comments point towards an “Opportunity”

New York Yankees GM hints at the possible lineup for 2024

Brian Cashman recently held a videoconference with the reporters. Talking about the Yankees’ offseason business and preparations for 2024, Cashman stated his happiness with his team’s progress. The Athletic reported that when asked about whether Schmidt would play as the fifth starter, Cashman gave a huge vote of confidence to the 27-year-old.

“I think he pitched his tail off. I think he’s earned that opportunity. We’ll see how everything goes out… I was really proud of the progress Clarke Schmidt took last year in his evolution,” Cashman declared.

When 2023 started, Schmidt was pretty low on everyone’s radar. He was expected to take small steps toward a full-time starting role and the terrible start to Schmidt’s season increased doubts, but then the injury bug bit the Pinstripes. Suddenly the pitcher was thrust into the no.2 position and surprisingly, he excelled.

In 14 starts from May 19 to August 8, Schmidt had an ERA of 3.12. Overall, he finished the season with 4.64 ERA in 33 games with 32 starts. They aren’t elite numbers, but in the squad that was bottom tier in most defensive criteria, Schmidt was one of the few consistent hands for a long period. So with the starting lineup set, could this mean the Yankees are out of the rotation market?

Are the Pinstripes focusing more on the bullpen?

It’s increasingly looking like the Yankees have completed the work on the starting rotation. This could mean an end to the rotational pursuits, at least for now. Especially as their payroll has crossed the $300 million mark. But it doesn’t mean the offseason is over as the Pinstripes still have their bullpen to work on.

The Yankees are reportedly in talks with Wandy Peralta and Hector Neris. The heavy right-handedness of their bullpen signals a potential acquisition of a lefty. So all in all looks like we’re getting closer to the final Yankees squad for the opening day.
