While MLB great Derek Jeter is a source of inspiration to many, his inspiration is his father, Dr. Sanderson Charles Jeter. Captain Clutch has played baseball for the better part of his life. But did you know his father is the reason he started to play the sport? Jeter’s father also played the game at Fisk University in Tennessee as a shortstop, eventually inspiring Derek to play the same position in his career. Then after playing the game for over two decades, when Jeter was awarded the most prestigious accolade of all, the Hall of Fame, he paid tribute to his father.

Derek Jeter has a strong relationship with his father!

It was Jeter’s father who pushed him to pursue baseball and who backed the former Yankee till the moment he signed his first contract. When Jeter had to leave Michigan to report at the Yankees’ Spring Training, his father encouraged him to take that step and took him to the airport. However, these are just two instances where the former substance counselor, Dr. Sanderson Charles Jeter, played a vital role in his son’s life.

Therefore, when the 5x World Champ gave his Hall of Fame speech, he made a tribute to his father. While thanking his father, “Dad, you’ve been the voice of reason. You taught me to be patient, listen, and think before I speak. You’ve always been there for advice, and to this day, you’re the first person I go to. I know when you were tired, playing every game with me. I remember you time to time telling me, keep building that resume, and look where it gotten us today.”

And Derek did precisely the same. He followed up on what his father said, built his resume, and now the name Derek Jeter is written as one of the legends of Major League Baseball.

Baseball runs in the Jeter family!

As said before, Jeter’s father used to play baseball in his college days. And in the summers, it was a tradition in the Jeter family to go see the New York Yankees play. 

This eventually instilled a love for the game in both Derek and his younger sister Sharlee Jeter. While Derek went on to become a baseball legend, his sister was no less. Sharlee became the softball champion in high school. And now, Sharlee’s son, Jalen Jeter, is following in the footsteps of his uncle Derek Jeter. It is also getting speculated that Jeter’s son, who is merely a month old, will also be following in his footsteps.
