The $21.8 million Philadelphia Eagles star Jalen Carter crossed the line with unsportsmanlike conduct in Thursday’s opener against the Dallas Cowboys. Only six seconds into the game, Eagles Pro Bowl defensive lineman was ejected for spitting on Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott. Carter, helmet in hand, walked straight into the tunnel at Lincoln Financial Field, leaving the Eagles without their top defensive force. Yet, the Eagles managed to hand the Cowboys a 24-20 defeat.

The ire of the defenseman was raised when Prescott spat first. However, as he admitted, Prescott had simply spit straight ahead as he usually would. Unfortunately, the spit landed in the area near Carter, which made him spit on Prescott’s jersey in the name of retaliation.

Unlike Carter, Prescott was neither flagged nor ejected. For the most part, none of us expected the NFL season opener to play out like this. Naturally, many in and out of the league expressed their disappointment in Carter, including Cameron Maybin, a former Yankees outfielder and current MLB broadcaster.“Spitting on someone is one of the ultimate signs of disrespect. I was rooting for Jalen Carter after everything he’s been through, but after that? Zero respect. There’s no stat for character!” It was just baffling for Maybin and all the others who witnessed the incident.

Post Eagles’ win, Carter was asked about the incident in the locker room. “It was a mistake that happened on my side. It won’t happen again. I feel bad for just my teammates and the fans out there. I’m doing it for them. Just not being able to start the game or even finish the game—it f—-d me up. But we’re going to get better. It won’t happen again. I can make that promise.” He admitted it. Due to Carter’s behavior, the Eagles were hit with a 15-yard penalty before the first snap from scrimmage. The Cowboys scored on the opening drive on Javonte Williams’ 1-yard touchdown run. Yet, the Eagles emerged victorious.

Just this week, Carter was praised by Eagles’ defensive coordinator Vic Fangio for the edge Carter brought to the unit. Now, he has certainly disappointed the team and all those who didn’t see it coming from Carter, such as Cameron Maybin. Incidents like these are rare in MLB. However, something similar or even worse happened back in 2021 during a Yankees-Red Sox game.

Wife of MLB legend upset after Yankees fan spat on their 9-year-old daughter

The wife of former Boston Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek alleged a Yankees fan spat on their 9-year-old daughter. While explaining what had happened, Varitek said her daughter was wearing a Varitek jersey and was walking to the car at Yankee Stadium when the fan allegedly spat on her child. The Red Sox were in the Bronx playing the Yankees for a four-game series at that time.

Catherine Varitek had called this incident “scary” and the behavior of the fan “straight-out filth and vile.” Varitek urged Red Sox fans to set examples of better behavior in the aftermath. “Baseball banter should be fun, not harmful and offensive,” Varitek noted on social media. “#BeSafe #BeKind.” She also mentioned that children should not be involved in sports rivalries.

“Kids are off limits. End of story.” She further noted. Her daughter received an outpouring of support after Varitek shared this incident. Her husband, Jason Varitek, played for Boston from 1997 to 2011.

During his MLB career in Boston, Varitek was a three-time All-Star and was part of the team’s two World Series championships in 2004 and 2007. After retirement, he served as a game planning coordinator for the Red Sox. It’s downright unacceptable to go after kids or players’ families amidst the sports rivalries like Yankees-Red Sox or Eagles-Cowboys.
