The New York Yankees are steeped in tradition. The team’s history stretches back over a hundred years, with the team’s fanbase being a tribute to that legacy. Enjoying a solid following, the Bronx Bombers have been a part of baseball’s most significant moments, including some iconic pennant wins. However, when even the greats step away from tradition, everyone stands to take note.

Amidst rumors that MLB Icon Derek Jeter may be up to take over the front office in the Bronx, a cross-promotion is making waves. One of Jeter’s closest friends from the NFL appeared at the Yankee Stadium. Although the Yankees valued the support of their fans, his departure from tradition was not well-received.

NFL Star Breaks Age-Old Yankees Tradition
Eli Manning, the former quarterback for the New York Giants, recently announced his allegiance to the Yankees via his social media. The picture of him holding up the Yankees jersey made fans notice a detail that seemed to irk them. The jersey also featured Manning’s name and his iconic #10.

The Pinstripes have traditionally only featured jersey numbers for their players and kept the players’ names off the jerseys. MLB regulations don’t require any teams to feature the players’ names on the back, and while some teams have opted for a different course of action, the Yankees have never featured the same on the backs of their jerseys.

To create better team spirit and stoke the emotion that no player is bigger than the team, the Yankees have also never featured the player’s name. However, Manning’s move indicates a clear departure from the same. However, even though the team upholds its traditions, are they following the same principles when it comes to their historical legacy?

Yankees fans have been hopeful that the front office will see some change. Even Derek Jeter has been in rumors to take over the top position, which many fans may see as a positive for future seasons. Jeter could be coming to the New York Yankees, and with some changes needed, could this be the first Yankee tradition he is set to change? It certainly will boost player morale, and Jeter has shown that he is not afraid of making a change.
While questions remain about the changes that Jeter could make, one thing is certain. The New York Yankees and their fanbase would happily see their Captain return, even if in a different role.
