Nick Castellanos gained wider publicity after hitting the 250th home run of his career in the Phillies’ 8-2 win against the Diamondbacks, but the veteran slugger’s limelight moment came in parallel with a more candid admission about his relationship with manager Rob Thomson. Despite the milestone, Castellanos’ comments showed an increasing lack of communication that has defined his role in Philadelphia’s crowded outfield.

I don’t really talk to Rob all that often. So that’s just – I play whenever he tells me to play. Then I sit whenever he tells me to sit, Castellanos stated. Over the last four years, Castellanos has experienced what he calls “questionable” communication with Thomson, contrasting sharply with that of his father. I grew up communicating with somebody like my father, who is very blunt, direct, and consistent, he shared with the Phillies Nation. While every manager has their own style, Castellanos acknowledged that actions and words sometimes fail to align, leaving him uncertain of expectations.

Over the course of the years, I’ll have expectations because I’ll latch on to what’s being said, and then actions will be different. And then I’m kind of left, you know, just thinking and whatnot. And now, it feels, without loud and clear communication, this player-skipper relationship won’t fix itself! But despite the differences, Castellanos stays focused on the ultimate aim.

Winning a World Series for the Phillies. He pushed aside concerns about his limited playing period, highlighting his commitment to the franchise. I’m here to do whatever I can to make sure Philadelphia wins a World Series ring. Whatever role that looks like, just do the best I can with that, he asserted. And even if Rob Thomson limits his at-bats, he did allow Castellanos to claim back some playing time in the last stretch, pointing out, Who knows? We all know Nick can get hot. As hot as anybody.

But expectedly, it is quite difficult for Castellanos to adjust to the part-time role after playing as an everyday player for his entire career. Yet, his persistence was on full swing on Friday, where he entered he game in the sixth inning and dropped a two-run homer in the eighth. It’s very difficult, it really is, Thomson commented on how Castellanos has adjusted. For a guy that’s played every day since he’s come to the big leagues…to take on this role is difficult. I think he’s trying to adjust. I think after tonight, that tells me something that he’s starting to get a feel for it.”

Finally, Castellanos’ aim stays in the present moment and performance. He is looked at with the team till the end of next season, but his future beyond this contract is not something he is planning yet.

Why would I do that in front of what we have ahead of us? That would be really selfish and take away from what we’re trying to do as a group, he mentioned. His relationship with Thomson is not flourishing, but Castellanos is putting his best into the franchise’s success first.

Meanwhile, on other news, Castellanos also gets a front-row view of the unpredictable and chaotic moments that make the Phillies’ season interesting off the diamond.
