But a person cannot fulfill everyone’s expectations of him. Relationships with everybody cannot go smoothly, and Jeter had his fair share of difficult relations. One of those is with his fellow Yankees player Alex Rodriguez. Another was the team’s general manager Brian Cashman. Their last clash happened during Jeter’s contract renewal after the 2010 season. At that time, Cashman made it clear to Jeter that he could easily get replaced.

“Do you really want me to answer that?” said Cashman. When the shortstop asked him to go ahead, he said he’d rather have Troy Tulowitzki play as a shortstop in the team. Furthermore, he added, “We’re not paying extra money for popularity. We’re paying for performance.”

Cashman said honesty sometimes hurts!

After what happened with the Captain’s contract, the GM talked to Sports Illustrated about it. He simply said that sometimes honesty hurts. He also added if a person is getting paid to do a job, he should just do that job.

“But if you’re being paid to do the job, do the job. You have to honor the job description; if not, you’re a fraud or stealing money. You can’t fake your way doing this. You either do it or you don’t,” said Cashman.
