During this career, Jeter achieved more than what many would’ve tried to. Jeter’s biggest achievement was the love and respect he gathered from the entire realm of sports across North America. This includes former players, fans, athletes, and celebrities.

And this wasn’t through his statistics or achievements, it was purely through the way he carried himself on the field. Jeter was always about winning and competing. This attitude made him fit well with the relatively haughty Yankee fandom and made him even more popular.

Derek Jeter and the Air Force incident

Back in 2016, an Air Force officer issued a $280 ticket to Derek Jeter for boating too close to an Air Force base. Jeter, who was casually mooching near his Tampa home was snapped by an active-duty Air Force member.

The ticker was posted online with an image of Jeter boating. The caption of the photo said, “On behalf of the Boston Red Sox, here is your ticket, Derek Jeter.”

Eventually, the Air Force apologized to Jeter for publicly mentioning the ticket. Base spokesperson Terry Montrose said, “This action is totally inconsistent with Air Force values and the responsible Airman will face the appropriate disciplinary action. We sincerely apologize to Mr. Jeter for any inconvenience.”

Barring the four victories, the Yanks appeared in two other World Series that they lost. All in all, this proved that Jeter was handed over the Yankee captaincy during their peak.

The problem with being at the peak is that you eventually come down. That’s precisely what happened. After the 2003 World Championship loss, the Yanks didn’t make a single World Series appearance till 2009. Finally, in 2009, the Yanks defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 and triumphed in the Championship. This came as a relief to the entire Yankee setup, especially captain Jeter.
