The San Diego Padres have a recurring issue—the ownership drama. The team has seen several owners ever since its existence with another family legal drama making the rounds. And what’s worse is that it has spilled over into the Padres off-season. Now, San Diego was in hot pursuit of the Japanese star pitcher Roki Sasaki. Meanwhile, late Padres owner Peter Seidler’s widow, Sheel Seidler’s filing came about.

The lawsuit was filed in January, accusing Matt and Bob Seidler of breaching fiduciary duties. It also alleges that Peter intended her to take on the organization’s responsibility. However, Matt and Bob, the brothers, have strongly refused these claims. In their 25-page response, they argued that Sheel is simply motivated by her desire to control.

They revealed that she has already received a $30 million Texas ranch and over $4.5 million in cash since Peter has passed. In their filing, it was said, “During a crucial time when Padres management was in late negotiation stages with a star pitcher, Sheel’s lawsuit recklessly suggested that Matt and his brothers were plotting to relocate the Padres elsewhere.” This is what even Roki Sasaki’s agent, Joel Wolfe, has mentioned.

Wolfe admitted that the timing of the lawsuit was concerning, The timing of it appeared oddly strategic, and I wanted to allow the Padres to deal with it first on their own terms rather than try to figure it out on our own, which they did.” But the cost was losing on Roki Sasaki, even though they had a great chance of locking him.

Remember, they have Yu Darvish, who literally Roki Sasaki claims to be his godfather. Plus, he always wanted a team that is not all bright lights and media chaos. However, in the end, it didn’t work out, giving a major blow to the franchise moving forward.
