You need surprises and unscripted thrillers; check into the ongoing NLDS Game 5 between the Cubs and Brewers. Why? Because it looks like the Brewers’ surprising moves with Trevor Megill aren’t slowing down anytime soon. Reportedly, in tonight’s game, Brewers manager Pat Murphy shocked everyone by having Megill start. And guess what, he actually delivered, keeping Cubs hitters off the scoreboard in the first inning for the first time this series.

But here’s the twist: Megill was pulled after just one inning to make way for Jacob Misiorowski. So what’s going on with the Brewers? Why start Megill if he’s not going to go deep, and why pull him when he’s pitching well? Clearly, not just us, but fans are scratching their heads over this one.

“I don’t understand pulling megill, let him take the second too, Miz needs to be done for the night.” A comment from one Brewers loyalist highlights that the decision would prove a disaster.

For the unversed, the Cubs have scored in the first inning of every game in this series. Hence, to try to change that in the finale, Murphy plans to have Megill start on the mound. Once Megill is done, Jacob Misiorowski is expected to handle multiple innings out of the bullpen. But since Misiorowski already came in during the second inning, fans are left wondering if he’ll really go all the way to the ninth for the Brewers. Or if other bullpen arms will be called on.

Megill, by the way, is still one of the least-used arms the Brewers have, having thrown just one inning in the series so far. He’s also one of their top pitchers, with a 2.49 ERA in the regular season. So, what could be the reason behind the Brewers not utilizing their best arm to the fullest?

Well, just like their surprise run this year, the Brewers’ roster moves are keeping fans on their toes, and maybe a little bewildered.

Fans are surprised by the Brewers’ pitching strategy

We are accustomed to the fact that the managers pull out their struggling starters. But Megill started with a bang. He got one SO without any runs scored from the 1st inning. “He should’ve pitched megill 2 innings,” one fan remarked. “Why was Megill removed?” added another. While there’s still no statement from the Brewers’ manager about his pitching tactics, we think it’s due to Megill’s past injury.

Well, earlier reports suggested that Megill would likely pitch just one inning, maybe two at most, given he’s primarily been a reliever and is still coming off a right elbow flexor strain that kept him out for a month.  Misiorowski was also in the mix, who hasn’t pitched since Monday, stepped up and dominated Chicago.

Sure enough, Misiorowski took over from Megill in the second inning, which makes you think the Brewers might be saving Megill for games where they’ll need him deeper into the outing. But will it prove a risky affair?

“Definitely would’ve let Megill get Suzuki out then put Miz in.. that was stupid,” another user said. “I’ll agree with you this time. Taking out Megill was stupid,” added another. And the fear might have come true because just in the second inning, Cubs’ Seiya Suzuki took out Misiorowski for a homer, leveling the score 1-1. However, Misiorowski is now also pulled out, with relievers taking over the game. So, might having Megill at the mound have been helpful for the Brewers?

“Trevor Megill only gets 1 inning,” a sad reaction from a fan. Yes, no one likes to miss a dominant inning from a pitcher. However, the Brewers are managing workload of Megill considering a few more games left, then we could agree with Murphy’s strategy. Let’s see if he proves right at the end of the night.
