It’s becoming a massively transformative period for the Baltimore Orioles. A 101-win season, a change in the ownership, and a blockbuster trade of Corbin Burnes to top it all off. The fanbase is certainly on a high, and so is the organization, but good times also bring with it the tough questions which need answers. Tread carefully; sometimes, the truth carries a heavy burden.

The Orioles know the importance of an ace. After all, it was the lack of one that ultimately cut off their wings against the Texas Rangers in the ALDS. Clearly, they’ve taken lessons from it. The Burnes trade is an example of that. But now do they keep him as a short-term rental or increase his stay? Here’s a huge chance for the O’s proving they aren’t The Birds of old. If only they welcome the opportunity with open arms.

The Baltimore Orioles – Old wine in a new bottle, or is this change real?
There was much surprise when the Orioles announced the trade for Corbin Burnes. Though it was expected that the Milwaukee Brewers would trade Burnes, not many expected it to be the O’s who’d take advantage of this. With the balance of power currently tilted towards them, the Orioles are ensuring their stranglehold on their division continues. But there’s something that can make this trade sweeter – an extension of Burnes’ deal.

As FanSided said, with the new ownership coming in, “the team might ultimately have the funds to sign him to a long-term contract next offseason.” This is doubly possible, as a deal like this would be a quick fire way for the new owners to build a connection with The Birds fans. Something that is, no doubt, on their minds.

However, as the article stated, they could sign him “next offseason”. What does this mean? Is an extension unlikely? Well, Burnes is a Scott Boras client. The super agent has always suggested his clients go for free agency as it opens up more doors. Most reports indicate that he could go for free agency next year just to test the market.

Luckily, the Orioles have a whole season to sell their project to Burnes. That can come in handy in their negotiations next offseason. But until then, the Orioles are on cloud nine regarding Burnes.

The Birds are flying high after acquiring Corbin Burnes
Right after announcing the trade, ESPN reported the O’s GM, Mike Elias, was in an ecstatic mood. “A big trade and I think a big addition and moment for our team. Corbin Burnes is exactly what we needed,” Elias said to reporters. He then pointed out that the team was pursuing Burnes since the beginning of the offseason and there was no one higher than him on their list.
So with the Orioles already impressed with the former Cy Young winner, speculations regarding a possible re-signing aren’t unfounded. But with a whole season to go, this story will continue to develop over time.
