Earlier this week, the Philadelphia Phillies added yet another name to an increasingly long list of PED suspensions. But the list has become so long in the past few years that even with players like Trea Turner backing the clubhouse, people are starting to question the management.
After Johan Rojas got suspended, Trea Turner came out and said, “I don’t think we’re proud of it. I think the integrity is still there. We have players that do things the right way. Every once in a while, stuff’s going to happen like this.”

25-year-old Johan Rojas received an 80-game suspension for the 2026 season after he tested positive for boldenone. That ban came 15 days after his test, which means he had to pull out of the WBC, too. This ruling came after the appeal failed and during his Grapefruit League games, where he was hitting just .167 across 10 games.
When you look at the Phillies, you find this is not an isolated case. Since 2009, the Phillies have had 8 suspensions, including names like Carlos Ruiz and Jose Alvarado. The earlier cases included names like Alec Asher, Daniel Stumpf, and Antonio Bastardo.

This pattern raised major questions about what the management is doing. The President of Baseball Operations, Dave Dombrowski, has declined to comment and has not given any clarification. And even Trea Turner is starting to have doubts of his own.
He says that the integrity is still there, but questions what the clubhouse staff is doing. He says the players are never fully aware of the substance they take and depend on the staff to guide them in the right direction.
This statement indirectly raises concern about whether the guidance in the clubhouse is following the rules set by the MLB. Or are the players choosing to ignore the rules even with good guidance?
How does this suspension impact the Phillies’ roster?
The Philadelphia Phillies issued a one-sentence statement after the suspensions, saying that they were disappointed and backed the MLB policies. Their response stayed brief, offering no defense. The silence shocked fans because Rojas kept playing spring games even when his suspension was in question.
Johan Rojas might not be the main man in the lineup. But he still offered situational value, including late-inning defense and pinch running. Without him, the Phillies have now lost a fallback option.
Now the focus shifts to replacements, with Justin Crawford expected to fill in the center field duties. They also have the option of Brandon Marsh, who can cover and has big league and high-pressure game experience like the NLDS game against the Dodgers in 2025.
The Phillies could also go to the minors and use the help of players like Pedro León and Cade Fergus. But the likelihood of them using Dante Nori, even though he is a top-rated prospect, is very low. But the problem is that the market for center field is also very thin and doesn’t have any names that could make an impact on the team.
