It was supposed to be a quiet climb for a young outfielder making his way through the Phillies system. Johan Rojas, just 24 and already carving his place in the big leagues. But what’s unfolding now feels more like a financial thriller than a baseball comeback story. Rojas is at the heart of a grievance that’s shaking up the MLB agency world. What began as a standard player-agent relationship has spiraled into a dispute involving money, trust, and alleged misconduct.
The controversy broke into the public eye after Phillies Tailgate posted: “Johan Rojas is accusing his former agent of financial misconduct.“
That one-liner set social media ablaze—but it barely scratches the surface of what’s actually going down behind the scenes. As per documents reviewed by The Athletic, Johan Rojas filed a formal grievance with the MLBPA last August, with allegations surrounding a former agent. This included taking two advances against future big league earnings, totaling a whopping $875,000. Additionally, Rojas was allegedly talked into making an investment in an academy. According to the grievance, “That advice was intentionally, recklessly, or negligently wrong for Rojas.”

The spotlight then turned towards Rep 1 Baseball, the agency where Rojas hired his agent during these transactions. The company was later acquired by Klutch Sports. Their legal representative emphasized, “Neither Klutch nor any of its employees had knowledge of the alleged conduct described in this article, said to have occurred long before the individual at issue was employed by Klutch.”
The drama doesn’t end there. Klutch’s legal reps have fired back, claiming Rojas and his lawyer attempted an “unsuccessful eight-month effort to extort Klutch out of $7.5 million.” They argue that Rojas willingly took the money and eagerly invested in the academy. The agent has remained silent throughout the investigation, offering no comment, while Rojas and his lawyer have stayed equally tight-lipped. The MLBPA is actively investigating but hasn’t offered much in the way of updates.
What’s your perspective on:
Is Johan Rojas a victim of betrayal, or did he gamble too much on his agent's advice?
Have an interesting take?
While Johan Rojas battles off-field drama that’s drawn the attention of the MLBPA, his name has also popped up in trade talks as the Phillies look to make a major midseason splash. The timing couldn’t be more complicated—or more telling.

Trade winds stir as Phillies consider swapping Rojas for slumping $50M slugger
As trade season heats up, the Philadelphia Phillies appear poised to make a bold move—and Johan Rojas could be the bait. With center field still a glaring need despite flashes from Rojas and Brandon Marsh, reports suggest the front office is eyeing Chicago’s Luis Robert Jr. In a recent ESPN report from Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel, Robert is listed as a top candidate to be moved at the deadline, with a whopping 90% chance of being dealt. His fit in Philly? Too obvious to ignore.
Transitioning from fit to flexibility, it’s worth noting that the Phillies are stacked in outfield depth. Justin Crawford, their highly touted prospect, is crushing it in the minors and could be ready for The Show soon. That gives President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski the leverage—and luxury—to move Rojas without completely gutting their outfield defense. Crawford’s similar speed-and-defense profile also helps soften the blow of parting with Rojas, who remains a fan favorite.
Of course, this wouldn’t be a no-strings-attached trade. Robert’s contract includes two $20 million club options in 2026 and 2027, which could become a burden if his struggles persist. But the Phillies’ win-now mindset and the White Sox’s willingness to absorb salary make the deal far from a fantasy. It’s the kind of high-upside gamble that championship contenders are willing to make, especially with October in mind.

The bigger question? Can the Phillies stomach letting go of Rojas just as he’s breaking through defensively, and fighting an off-field battle of his own?
