The 2025 World Series was a Hollywood blockbuster, featuring everything from once-in-a-generation on-field moments to unforgettable off-field drama. See, we’re still talking about Game 4 at Dodger Stadium on October 28, when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sat front row, smiling for the cameras and wearing L.A. Dodgers gear. It was just a simple baseball cap—what could possibly go wrong?

Well, just about everything. The Dodgers were playing the Toronto Blue Jays, the team that happens to be Canada’s only Major League Baseball franchise. Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, lived in Toronto for years while filming Suits, and the couple even made their public debut in Toronto. Furthermore, the couple briefly lived in Canada after stepping down as senior royals. Meghan Markle, a California native, received a pass from most. But Harry? He is, after all, the son of King Charles III, Canada’s head of state. So, the fans from north of the border weren’t happy.

A few days later, the 41-year-old gave an exclusive interview to CTV News on November 6 while traveling to Toronto to visit war veterans, where he faced the “hat-gate” scandal head-on. “Firstly, I would like to apologize to Canada for wearing it,” Harry stated. “Secondly, I was under duress. There wasn’t much choice.” He explained that the Dodgers’ owner invited him to the game, so he felt that wearing the team’s hat was simply “the polite thing to do.”

Then, the Prince offered his most hilarious excuse. He blamed his thinning hairline for the entire cap controversy. “When you’re missing a lot of hair on top, and you’re sitting under floodlights, you’ll take any hat that’s available,” Harry admitted.

And he didn’t stop there with his apology. He actually put on a Toronto Blue Jays cap right on camera. “I’m going to wear this from now on,” he promised. “Now that I’ve admitted that, it’s going to be really hard to return to Los Angeles.”

Harry and Markle have lived in Los Angeles since 2020, in the city where Markle grew up and where her father worked as a lighting director. But still, Harry was devastated because the Jays lost in the World Series. “I’m very sorry to the Canadian public. Devastated that the Blue Jays lost. Go Jays.”

A witty apology is one thing. But was the Duke of Sussex telling the truth?

So what really happened…

The Dodgers won the World Series in a dramatic Game 7 on November 1. That same day, a friend of the couple, Kelly McKee Zajfen, posted an Instagram Story that showed the couple’s reaction. The video showed that Meghan was laughing and dancing for the L.A. victory, but meanwhile, Harry was sitting quietly in a recliner, looking less excited. And at the end, the friend’s caption said it all: “Best game ever! Sorry H, your team didn’t win but mine diiiiiiid.”

But you know this 2025 World Series wasn’t Harry and Meghan’s first trip to a ballpark. They famously made a surprise appearance at the first-ever MLB game played in London in June 2019 between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. Though that appearance was an official royal duty, and they were there to support Harry’s Invictus Games Foundation, so no one questioned their loyalty then.

But even the 2019 game also had a surprising family connection to this recent one. Meghan met and hugged her distant cousins, Red Sox star Mookie Betts, that time in London. Fast forward to 2025, and that same Mookie Betts is now a star player for the L.A. Dodgers. So, perhaps Meghan was just cheering for a distant relative and his hometown all along.
