“It was one of those nights where a superior athlete was on top of his game and was in a tremendous rhythm out there,” then-D-backs manager Bob Brenly said about Randy Johnson in May 2004. And that’s exactly what comes to mind whenever we think of Randy Johnson: Dominance. Standing at 6-foot-10 with a fastball that regularly touched triple digits. The Big Unit didn’t just pitch; he intimidated, outmatched, and overwhelmed. And with over 4,800 strikeouts to his name, second-most in MLB history, Johnson’s legacy as one of baseball’s greatest flamethrowers is undeniable.

But as it turns out, even this 5x Cy Young winner isn’t immune to being outwitted most unexpectedly. All it took was one clever daughter and one well-timed prank to remind us legends, too, can surrender. At least when it comes to family.

“Randy Johnson had enough of his daughter’s antics,” Jomboy Media reported with a small heartwarming clip.

The former Mariners legend and Hall of Famer Randy Johnson is going viral thanks to a TikTok trend. The trend involves individuals constantly asking their friends and family if they wish they were athletic. Imagine Johnson getting asked for the same.

Johnson found himself caught up in it when his daughter, volleyball standout Willow Johnson, kept asking this question during a meal. Naturally, it threw Johnson off. After all, this is a guy who dominated MLB and was also a standout basketball player back in high school. The next few minutes in the video show classic Johnson.

He leaned in with a puzzled look and tried to figure out how on earth he was supposed to answer a question like that. And to a constant query of “Do you ever wish you were athletic,” Randy Johnson had the same response…

“Well, I was athletic enough to do what I needed to do in my life … It doesn’t matter now. I was just athletic enough … Do you hear what I’m saying? I was just athletic enough to fulfill the position that I played in my sport professionally at a high level … I’m pretty athletic. I’m a Hall of Fame baseball player, and I was pretty good at what I did … There were years that I was the best in my sport at what I did.”

The response from Johnson seems less like an MLB great. It was more like a loving dad who just got tricked by his daughter. But the more we saw him, the more his on-field presence kept coming back to us. One of the most intimidating pitchers of all time, with 2162 SOs with the Mariners…

Does Randy Johnson's daughter's prank prove even legends can be humbled by family?

Johnson’s athleticism is well backed by figures

Randy Johnson wasn’t just athletic. But what really made him special was how well he moved for his size. Plus, he’s multi-talented. In high school, he wasn’t just a baseball star; he was also a standout basketball player. Johnson could’ve easily played at the college level in either sport, which tells you a lot about his raw athleticism.

But, on the mound, he was downright scary. His fastball regularly hit 100 mph, and he paired that with a wicked slider that made even the best hitters look clueless. That combo was nearly impossible to handle, especially coming from such a long stride.

Remember the 2001 World Series? Johnson pitched against the Yankees in Game 6 and again came out of the bullpen in Game 7 with two outs in the eighth inning. He shut down the final batter of the eighth and then breezed through the Yankees in the ninth. And with that clutch performance, Johnson pulled off something incredibly rare. He became the first pitcher in 55 years to earn a win as a starter in Game 6 and as a reliever in Game 7 of the World Series.

By the end of his career, Johnson had racked up five Cy Young Awards, over 4,800 strikeouts (second-most ever), a perfect game at age 40, and a World Series MVP. And yes, we still remember that one time he accidentally vaporized a bird with a fastball!
