The Yankee Stadium will celebrate Old Timers Day on Aug 9, and many Yankee legends will be in attendance, but ‘The Captain’ Derek Jeter won’t be there. When this news first broke, it was understandably shocking for the fans, but even an NFL legend criticized Jeter for missing the occasion to celebrate the Yankees’ legacy. However, we now know the reason why he is missing it.

Old-Timers’ Day isn’t simply a trip down memory lane. It’s a short, three-inning game where Yankees legends put on their cleats again. Since 1947, the Bronx Bombers have welcomed HOF, coaches, and broadcasters on this special occasion. It will be back on Saturday, August 9, again after being put on hold during COVID.

The last time a traditional alumni baseball game was played at the Yankees Old Timers’ Day was in 2019. Following that, the event was either canceled due to the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, or took place with on-field ceremonies and Q&A sessions in 2022, 2023, and 2024, without an actual game.

When it came to light that Mr. November wouldn’t be attending the event this year, Boomer Esiason, a former quarterback for the New York Jets and a famous voice on New York radio, wasn’t happy. “To me, it’s a little insulting….You are one of the best players in Yankees history. You’re one of the greats in Yankees history. The fans adore you. You understand the importance of this franchise better than most,” he said.

However, renowned commentator Suzyn Waldman has now revealed the real reason for Jeter’s absence: “Derek Jeter will not attend this year’s #Yankees Old-Timers’ Day because of his daughter’s birthday,” she reported, as quoted by the Bronx Bomber News on X.

The traditional alumni game, which is scheduled to return for the 77th Old Timers’ Day, will also commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Yankees’ 2000 World Series championship team.

Derek Jeter had attended the Yankees Old Timers’ Day in September 2023, where he was a prominent figure during the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the 1998 World Series championship team. He later participated in a question-and-answer roundtable session too, with other former Yankees greats. But this year, his seat will be vacant.

Jeter’s absence this year is a significant disappointment for the fans because he is more than just a Yankees icon; he is ‘The Captain.’ He has been an All-Star 14 times, won the World Series five times, and hit 3,465 home runs. But while he will be missed, fans are still excited for the event, because there will be other Yankees legends in attendance.

Derek Jeter may sit out, but August 9 is still a star‑studded reunion

Old-Timers’ Day on August 9 will be a star-studded reunion, even though Derek Jeter won’t be there. Fans look forward to seeing Hall of Famers Mariano Rivera and Joe Torre, along with a host of other beloved Yankees legends.
