Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series was the last straw for the Red Sox and Yankees rivalry, and no one felt the sting of Boston’s 4-3 loss more than Dave Portnoy. The founder of Barstool Sports watched his team blow chances at Yankee Stadium, where Austin Wells’ two-out RBI single in the eighth inning sealed the win and set up a winner-take-all Game 3. Now everything is on the line as the series goes back to the Bronx.

Portnoy, the most outspoken Yankees critic in baseball, let out his anger right after the loss. “That was so bad… Yankees literally just tried to give us the game and we refused,” he tweeted, which perfectly summed up Boston’s self-inflicted wounds. The long-time Red Sox fan said, “I hate the Yankees so much. You forget how much you hate them till you get in a series like this.”

The loss hurt more because Boston missed chances throughout the game. In a passionate video breakdown, Portnoy went over the mistakes: “Jarren Duran drops a fly ball, routine fly ball. Shouldn’t be a hit, scores a run.” He criticized Rafael’s failed bunt attempt with runners on base, noting how it “kills all the momentum.” The worst part was when Nate Eaton hesitated on Yoshida’s hit to the infield. “He stops; he would have walked home, and that was the game,” Portnoy said, knowing that that one play changed Boston’s pitching choices in the last few games.
Portnoy was especially angry with Fernando Cruz, making fun of the reliever’s celebration even though his team lost. “Fernando Cruz celebrating like he did a god—n thing is hilarious,” he tweeted. The comment showed that people were generally unhappy with how Boston played in high-pressure situations, when the Red Sox didn’t take advantage of New York’s mistakes.

Portnoy vented his anger online, but the game itself told the story of missed chances. The Yankees took what the Red Sox didn’t want.

Chisholm breaks Red Sox hearts in Yankees win
Portnoy was furious about Boston’s mistakes, but the Yankees took advantage of every chance they got. Jazz Chisholm Jr. was the key player, scoring the winning run from first base on Austin Wells’ two-out single in the eighth inning. The fast infielder had a lot to prove after missing the first game of the series, and he came through when it counted.
Chisholm’s effect went beyond his game-winning dash. He made two amazing defensive plays at second base that stopped the Red Sox from getting any momentum on their rallies. Chisholm didn’t think twice when Wells hit a pitch down the right-field line in the eighth. Even though Nate Eaton made a great throw from right field, he slid in headfirst just before the tag, breaking the 3-3 tie and sending Yankee Stadium into chaos.

During the game, the Yankees got help from a number of different places. Ben Rice hit a two-run home run in the first inning to get things going. In the fifth inning, Aaron Judge hit a single that drove in a run and put New York ahead 3-2. Jarren Duran’s mistake in left field helped. Trevor Story was the only one who could score for the Red Sox, hitting a home run and driving in all three runs.
When Story hit a ball deep into center field with the bases loaded in the seventh inning, it almost gave Boston the lead again. The drive died at the warning track, which made Fernando Cruz go crazy and pump up the Fenway crowd after he got out of the jam. Portnoy would later be angry about that celebration. The outcome of everything now depends on Game 3 on Thursday night, when rookie Cam Schlittler pitches for New York against Boston’s Connelly Early.
