Just when the Boston Red Sox thought they could tread water after a quiet trade deadline, another wave came crashing in. The already struggling pitching staff took a brutal hit as an expensive star officially saw his season end—not due to performance, but because of surgery, and the timing couldn’t be crueler.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora broke the news to the Boston Herald that Tanner Houck is scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery, confirming what fans had feared for weeks. “Red Sox’ Tanner Houck is having Tommy John surgery, Alex Cora just told us,” wrote reporter Gabrielle Starr in a recent X post.

This was news the Red Sox were simply not ready to absorb. Houck had been sidelined since May 13 with a flexor pronator strain and was originally thought to return by late summer. The management also banked on that timeline. However, after a stalled rehab and lingering soreness in the last month, the news was rather expected. Wasn’t it? And now, Houck’s absence stretches an already thin rotation further. What hurts even more is that this news came after the deadline passed, leaving no time for a contingency move.

Heading into the deadline, the team was strongly linked to top-tier stars but settled for Dustin May and Steven Matz—both elite stars, yet not the game-changers many hoped for. Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow addressed the criticism, saying, “There’s not a lot of sympathy for how hard we tried to get deals across the line. I understand that.” Breslow’s statement did not exactly rally the fans. The optics? This team in contention lost a vital pitcher and walked away from the trade frenzy with two question marks.

Now, with Houck sidelined for the season and no vital reinforcement in sight, the team’s gamble to ride with what the Red Sox had looks increasingly questionable. The Red Sox needed stability. Instead, they have another gap in the rotation. While his loss is a heavy blow, another looming decision—centered on the team’s most electric outfielder—could define the Red Sox’s long-term trajectory.

Red Sox could finally move on from Jarren Duran in offseason shake-up

For months, Jarren Duran’s name hovered in the trade rumors, yet the deadline came and went—he stayed put. Now, with the deadline dust settled and a vital offseason looming, signs point toward the team parting ways with their All-Star outfielder. Despite solid interest from multiple contenders, the Sox opted to retain Duran at the deadline. However, according to FanSided’s Christopher Kline, his time in the Red Sox may be nearing its natural conclusion. With a .265 average, .793 OPS, and 11 homers, Duran has plenty of value, and that could be exactly what the team leverages this winter.

The reason? A classic roster logjam. The Red Sox boast a crowded outfield featuring Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Wilyer Abreu—each identified as a long-term asset. Rafaela, specifically, may not match Duran’s bat, but he shines defensively with 16 OAA. The team is also watching stars like Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer climb the pipeline. According to Kline, “someone has to go,” and despite his current surge, Duran appears to be the odd man out. As the Red Sox prepare to hunt for a frontline starter to pair with Garrett Crochet, Duran’s trade value could be the key that unlocks the team’s next big splash.

The Red Sox are walking a fine line between contending now and restructuring for the future. With Houck’s season-ending surgery and Duran’s uncertain status, the team faces tough choices ahead. Whether reshuffling the roster or addressing vital gaps, the team needs to act boldly.
