Do you believe that baseball games couldn’t be spicier? Then you have surely missed Wednesday’s matchup between the Blue Jays and Red Sox, which played out like something straight out of Hollywood. It started as a must-win for the Jays to clinch the AL East, and yet they came up short. Then veteran George Springer didn’t hold back, calling out the umpires for missed calls and even suggesting they were favoring the Yankees.

After that, things escalated when Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Jays’ hitting coach got ejected after arguing over bad calls. And just when you thought the drama was over, the Blue Jays’ own broadcast booth stirred up a whole new controversy. This time, accusing the Red Sox of sign-stealing.

“I think Berrios is saying to Romy Gonzalez, ‘Stop giving away location or pitches.’ Jose is thinking that the Red Sox have something on him,” said Jays broadcaster Dan Shulman. “And they have a reputation for that,” added another announcer, Buck Martinez.

The drama kicked off in the eighth inning.

With two runners on the bases, Blue Jays’ Jose Berrios seemed to think Red Sox runner Romy Gonzalez was tipping pitches from second base. He stepped off the mound and had some pointed words for Gonzalez. He even had a few words with Red Sox third base coach Kyle Hudson.

That’s enough for the broadcasters to share that many teams this season believe the Red Sox have been stealing signs. And the replay did show some clear jawing between Berrios and Gonzalez. But so far, the Blue Jays haven’t filed any official complaint or made any statement, nor is there any definitive proof of the allegations.

Yet, the accusation got amplified with the fact that the Red Sox manager, Alex Cora, was with the Astros during their infamous 2017 sign-stealing scandal.

This isn’t the first time the Red Sox have been in the middle of sign-stealing accusations this year. Back in June, Angels called out Boston’s first base coach, Jose Flores, during the opener of their series. That dust-up escalated quickly, with Flores jawing at Angels pitching coach Barry Enright. We remember how several Red Sox players spilled onto the field before things cooled down.

In early August, it happened again.

This time, the Astros were in town, and when Hector Neris came into their August 2 game, Trevor Story ripped a double and got a clear look at Neris’s grips. Trevor Story seemed to pass that info along to Carlos Narvaez at the plate. Result? Benches from both teams cleared once again.

And now, this latest Blue Jays episode fits into a larger pattern of accusations against Boston. And it’s worth noting that it all comes during a stretch when the Red Sox were one of MLB’s hottest teams. They put together multiple win streaks, including a 10-gamer heading into the All-Star break!
