It’s not even 36 hours since the Red Sox traded Rafael Devers. The shocking move came right after one of their prospects, Kristian Campbell, agreed to play first base. Devers had earlier denied that proposition, and what followed was the ultimate breakdown between him and the team. But now that he has been traded to the Giants, it opens doors for more blockbuster agreements. Any guesses who might get traded next?
MLB insider Jim Bowden weighed upon the potential trades, while speaking on Foul Territory. “Can the Red Sox pivot?” Sure, they can. Just like when the Yankees pivoted when they lost Juan Soto to the Mets, they pivoted this offseason,” he said. Bowden believes the Red Sox can use the money to acquire Pete Alonso, who is in red-hot form at the moment.
The Mets, on the other hand, may be looking for a trade as well. As per an Instagram post by DugoutForever, “The Mets could be interested in trading for Red Sox outfielder and 2024 MLB All-Star Game MVP Jarren Duran, says Jon Heyman of the NY Post.”

But the question is: what would it take for the Mets to get Duran from Boston?

The Mets might not see Duran as a replacement for Pete Alonso. He can, however, be a potential solution to their center field problem. While Devers’ trade certainly leaves us with a lot of questions about what the Red Sox are planning to do, they have not dropped any hints yet that they are willing to let Duran go.
Duran has been hitting at a .264 average this season, posting five home runs and 38 RBIs and even stealing 14 bases. He had an excellent season in 2024 too. His hitting ability is also well complemented by his strong defensive skills in center field.
What’s your perspective on:
Is the Devers trade a repeat of the Mookie Betts disaster for the Red Sox?
Have an interesting take?
With the Red Sox focused on building a young team, they might consider letting him go, given that he will turn 29 in September. But again, no hints yet!
Bowden, meanwhile, feels the Devers trade is a “total disaster” for the Red Sox. Just as earlier, when they traded Mookie Betts in February. That didn’t go the way they expected either. And Bowden reckons the Devers trade might turn out worse than that.
Nevertheless, now that Boston has got the money and the scope, going for Pete Alonso might just be the right thing to do.
Will the Pete Alonso trade be a good bet for the Red Sox?
The Boston Red Sox are currently standing fourth in the AL East with a 38-36 record. With Rafael Devers’ exit, their chances of making it to the playoffs might have gone bleak even further. But if they somehow manage to land Alonso, it certainly would give them a boost.

Alonso, who is having one of the best seasons with the Mets, is batting at an impressive .293 average and .960 OPS, with 17 home runs, and 63 RBIs. But guess what? He wishes to complete his career with the Mets only.
“That could be awesome. It’s really rare for a guy to spend his whole career with one team—I mean, I’ve thought about it, for sure,” he said previously. It’s, in fact, pretty hard to imagine how the Mets offense might look without Alonso.
From Boston’s perspective though, they are in desperate need of a first baseman. Although they now have Kristian Campbell, who has agreed to play first base, Alonso will bring far more experience to the table.

But will the Mets let Alonso go? Well, in baseball, we can never say never. Boston might put an undeniable offer on the table. Alonso is currently on a two-year, $54 million deal with the Mets with an opt-out option until 2025. Do you think this potential trade may materialize?
