Well, amid all the on-field drama, with the postseason closing in and the Red Sox making a late push to sneak into the playoff picture, it’s easy to forget something big. Guess what, the team has actually been without a GM for the past two years. Hard to believe, right? Well, since stepping in as Boston’s chief baseball officer last October, Craig Breslow has had his hands full. And his workload isn’t slowing down with another critical offseason just around the corner.

So it makes perfect sense that Breslow could be looking to bring someone on board to help manage the Red Sox roster. And if the rumors are to be believed, the Red Sox are already in the hunt for a new GM under Breslow. What’s new is their hunt might just get accelerated with what the Orioles are doing! As per MLB insider Britt Ghiroli, “the Orioles quietly promoted Mike Elias to president this winter. The team is starting a search for a GM under him now.” And the Red Sox might follow suit.

On this subject, Craig Breslow will prioritize finding a GM early this coming offseason. Has gone without one in his first two seasons,” insider Rob Bradford reposted the Orioles’ update with a Red Sox insight.

So, word is, the Orioles have been gearing up to bring in a new GM to work under the president of baseball operations, Mike Elias. He quietly got a promotion from Baltimore’s ownership group last offseason.

The Red Sox, meanwhile, have been without a GM since Chaim Bloom until 2023, when Craig Breslow stepped in. Reportedly, the man before Bloom shifted into an executive VP role. And Breslow, now 45, has been running the entire baseball operations department for Boston ever since. However, the question here is why the Red Sox failed to bring in a new GM since 2023?

Insider Sean McAdam has an answer. “And increasingly, sources add, there’s concern about the surrounding infrastructure,” McAdam said back in 2023. Well, a majority of the Red Sox front office executives have been part of the organization for more than 2 decades. And hence, the incoming GMs are not sure if they can have their opinions in place. Moreover, McAdam also highlighted the lack of intent among the Red Sox owners to alter the status quo, which further reduces the importance of new ideas from the new GMs.

And just when the trades and free agency are impending, Breslow will be more armed with new executives. If you remember the last trade deadline, you know how it went for the team. A new face in the front office team might avoid such a scene again in the upcoming offseason.

So, if the Red Sox bring in the right GM, it could help take some weight off Breslow’s shoulders and let him zero in on more specific responsibilities. Ahh, maybe even sharpening the team’s focus on trades and fresh talent. That’s the hope, anyway.

The Red Sox might see some more front-office shocks

Well, it’s starting to look like the Red Sox’s front office shuffle might go beyond simply hiring a new GM. And manager Alex Cora’s future could also be in play. Hard to believe, but yes, his seat might be hotter than many realize. Reportedly, ever since the fallout from the Rafael Devers saga a few months back, where frustrations reportedly spilled over between the clubhouse and the higher-ups, Cora has been caught in the middle of some serious tension.

MLB insider Joon Lee reported that the relationship between the front office and the coaching staff has grown increasingly strained.

So, with those kinds of revelations out in the open, it’s no surprise some around the league are predicting Cora could be the next manager on his way out. But wait! The Red Sox did just sign him to a three-year extension last season. And that makes the idea of moving on from him so soon a tough sell.

On the flip side, though, baseball has always been full of curveballs. And ownership might decide a clean slate is worth the gamble if the internal friction keeps rising. Let’s see how it goes.
