Discussion about where Alex Bregman will play is now over but discussion about Bregman’s position in the Red Sox is on! While the last few months are gone in anticipating the destination for him, it is now time to anticipate in which position, Bregman will play. Reportedly, Bregman was to play at 2B with the Red Sox but the recent statement from their skipper Alex Cora fueled further speculations.

From the team’s perspective, 2B is the best place for Bregman to fit but his figures at 3B are too good to lose for the Red Sox. The spring training is ongoing and if not now, then when the team will decide about the logical position for Bregman? Moreover, with Rafael Devers at 3B, why would the Red Sox even think of replacing him with Bregman? Well, from the statement of Cora, it seems to be a time-consuming job for the team and no immediate action is expected. What are the ways forward for the team this year involving Bregman?

The Sox’s dilemma with Bregman’s position

The Red Sox’s dilemma with Alex Bregman’s position long ago. Since they entered into contention for Bregman, questions are raised about which position the Sox will offer to Bregman and it was concluded that 2B will be the most logical fit for him. Reportedly, Alex Bregman also agreed to the same but now that went for a toss. So what made the Red Sox rethink about offering 2B to Bregman? It is his figures at 3B. As a third baseman, Bregman had 191 HRs and 663 RBIs in his career with a BA of .272. His 2017 season as a third baseman was special when he led AL third basemen in fielding percentage (.970; the fourth-highest fielding percentage by a third baseman in team history).

We will talk about that later on, I mean, right now there’s a lot of stuff going on… we will make the decision when we have to make it”, said Cora during their recent spring season press meet. Well, surely no plans about where to place Bregman is going in the team. While Bregman has lots to offer at 3B, his skills at 2B are yet to be tested. On the other hand, Devers is also well-established at 3B for the Sox. His 200 HRs and 638 RBIs with BA of a .279 are the same worthy as Bregman and he has been playing for the Sox since 2017. So yes a tough pill for the Rex Sox to decide the position for Bregman.

Ways forward

Well, the most logical lineup for the Red Sox will be to place Alex Bregan at 2B and Devers at third base. In this case, the reliability from Devers can be continued while Bregman can strengthen a position the Red Sox have lacked stability at since Dustin Pedroia’s career ended due to injuries after the 2017 season. Fielding Devers at the second, Bregman at the third, and Triston Casas at the first is the strongest base that the Red Sox can offer. Considering how athletic Bregman still is, it would be a seamless transition for him to the second base.

If Bregman is placed at the third, Devers needs to move to the second, which poses the risk of shuffling the entire lineup. Rather than the unwanted risk to take, the Red Sox will have plenty of time to sort all that out in time for opening day on March 27 against the Rangers. Something that Cora has said about deciding later. Anything goes by, the Red Sox is one of the leading contenders for the October acts and fans are all hoping to make it big this year.

Cora will surely place Bregman as best of the team and thus a bigger season from him is just a few days away.
