Alex Rodriguez was an absolute legend on the baseball field. Although he did not always play fair, the former New York Yankees slugger’s stats made him one of the best in the game. A-Rod’s hefty contracts proved the belief teams had in his potential. And for the most part, he lived up to it. Now that he’s retired, he seems to have taken an interest in a new sport.

After a failed bid for ownership of the New York Mets, Rodriguez turned his focus to the NBA. Along with business partner Marc Lore, the former Yankee is now in the process of obtaining majority ownership of the Minnesota Timberwolves. And while he owns a professional basketball team, the retired athlete is dabbling in the sport as well. In fact, he just issued an open challenge to another retired NFL athlete, Matt Leinart.

Alex Rodriguez and Matt Leinart Meeting On the Hard Court?

A-Rod is quite the social media personality and often shares snippets of his personal life on Instagram. Many of his posts show him trying to shoot hoops, with him usually failing to nail three-pointers. Recently, Rodriguez posted another video of trying to throw the ball into the basket from the three-point line. But he knows it’s a failed shot even before the ball reaches its final destination.

He can be heard saying to someone off-camera, “Oh no, one more, one more, one more. It gets better, hold on.” The video cuts off before he can make another shot and the caption hilariously reads, “This is why I played baseball.” Retired NFL star Matt Leinart then posted a clip of himself playing basketball beside the video of A-Rod. And the former Arizona Cardinals player easily makes the shot.

Incidentally, Leinart recently paid a visit to the Timberwolves and shot some hoops with them in Minnesota. While their owner could still use some tips to better his game, the retired quarterback is apparently already a pro. He had captioned the video of himself and Rodriguez, “AROD 1v1 Game soon?” To which Rodriguez replied in a repost, “Rematch’!!!”

It would be a fun meeting if the two former athletes met on the hard court for a sport neither of them has played professionally before. Interestingly, Leinart’s son is quite a basketball player and is following in his dad’s footsteps.

Athletic Genes Are Passed Down in the Leinart Family

Father-son duos in sports never get old. While Leinart officially chose to go with football, he was a letterman on his high school basketball team. And his son Cole seems to be on the same path. While he will probably choose the football way, his basketball skills are definitely something to brag about.
