Celebration of one of the best financial decisions by Bobby Bonilla

In baseball, the date of July 1 is now known as ‘Bobby Bonilla Day.’ This is to honor the best decisions made by Bobby and his agents. It was on this day in the year 2000 that the decision of him to get paid $1.19 million by the New York Mets was made.

In 2000, Bonilla got traded back to the Mets. And they wanted to buy him out for the remainder of his contract than let him play. Then came Bonilla’s agents, and with their help, Bobby signed a contract that deferred the rest of his contract over 25 years, starting from 2011. Additionally, in the contract, there is an increase of 8% interest every year.

This year, to celebrate Bobby Bonilla day, his former agents decided to sell NFTs and put his addendum on auction. The auction was held on Saturday at Goldin and sold for $180,000. The winner gets much more than just the addendum. The benefits include a 30-minute zoom call with Bobby and his agent, Dennis Gilbert, who was part of the deal.

Not only this, but the winner also gets a signed baseball, a used bat from Bonilla’s collection, a day with Bonilla, a trip to Citifield for viewing of batting practice, a dinner, and also an NFT contract of Bonilla’s.

It’s a fun day for Bobby

The New York Mets in the year 2000 wanted to buy Bobby out of his contract rather than let him play. They thought doing so would get them double digits returns. Those double-digit returns did not come. But Bobby is still going to get paid for another 13 years by the Mets. With his pay increasing by 8% every year.
