The Oakland Athletics $67 million star has never really minced his words. Speaking his mind, he once called himself the “worst pitcher” in baseball. This was two seasons ago during his slump. Well, he has also bashed other clubs in the past. As a Met during last season, for his then cross-town rivals, he said that the Yankees only have “two good hitters.” Even now, he is just as harsh or maybe even more.

Well, given the instances, you must have already guessed that we’re referring to Luis Severino. The Athletics signed him last year in December for a 3-year, $67 million deal. Yes, that happens to be the richest contract in the Athletics history.

If you’ve been keeping tabs, you’d know that the Athletics have been playing in West Sacramento as of late. They moved from Oakland because their lease at their Oakland Stadium came to an end in 2024. Well, there were many failed attempts to build a new ballpark in Oakland itself. Hence, the team will be staying in West Sacramento till 2027.

Going a bit harsh, Severino recently drew a comparison of Sutter Health Park to a spring training game. Just last week, he complained about the stadium’s lack of air conditioning. “It’s really tough,” he commented. It didn’t go unnoticed by former MLB GM Jim Bowden.

Speaking with Foul Territory, he stated, “Luis Severino knew exactly what he signed up for when he agreed to a deal with the A’s. He knew he was going to West Sacramento. Three years—they’re not going to Vegas until after that. This is what happens with greed.” Brutal, yes! However, Severino wasn’t any less harsh. His bluntness has added another layer to his trade rumors. As per Bob Nightengale from USA Today, the Athletics “can’t wait” to ship Severino off.

Bowden reflected on Severino’s mentality. He said, “‘I [Severino] want to take the most years and the most money. My agent wants me to as well because he gets a better commission.’ No one else offered three years for $67 million. ‘That’s where I’m going.’ Well, then you’ve got to live up to it.”

In Severino’s defense, he added in his comments that he isn’t the only one who feels that way about Sutter Health Park. He implied that there are others too. However, his teammates were certainly not as brutal as him. At this point, as it seems, Severino’s traits might affect the possibilities of his trade.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Luis Severino's blunt honesty a breath of fresh air or a liability for the Athletics?

In which club can the Athletics star land next?

It hasn’t been that long since Luis Severino landed with the Oakland Athletics. It has been barely months since he signed the richest deal in Athletics history. Still, his comments—brutal and openly made—have not gone unnoticed. For the record, Severino has a poor 6.79 ERA across 57 innings. On the road, however, he has a firm 3.04 ERA.

The trade deadline is right around the corner. And while the Athletics can’t wait to trade him, we might as well discuss the possible teams Severino might land with. So far, the Los Angeles Dodgers are looking like a decent fit for him. The world series champions can make the most of somebody like Severino, who comes with a decent playoff experience.

Overall, he has offered stability to the Athletics. He has already logged nearly 100 innings. Another option for him could be the New York Mets. Wouldn’t it be an intriguing reunion? He is a former Met, after all. With them, he collected 11 wins and concluded with a 3.91 ERA.

Then, the Yankees are a possibility too. He has spent 8 long years with them and recorded a 3.79 ERA there. Well, looking at the Yankees’ desperation for pitching rotation, they might make the most of Severino.
