The second game of the 2023 World Series was memorable for many reasons but one particular player stands out. The Arizona Diamondbacks almost took a game 1 win when the Texas Rangers responded with a comeback. Not letting it go on the second day, the Snakes demolished the opposition, 9-1. Helping along the rally was Jace Peterson, who may not have gotten a chance in the batter’s box had it not been for Tommy Pham.

Passing on the opportunity to make history, the outfielder opted to go for sportsmanship instead. As Peterson stood in the dugout, Pham made a classy move by asking Peterson to hit instead of him. The D-backs had a healthy lead of 7-1 while proceeding into the ninth inning but Pham was confident. What could show better team spirit than this? Torey Lovullo was clearly proud.

As Tommy Pham walked up to D-backs manager, Torey Lovullo, he knew he had met the conditions set by the skipper. Lovullo’s contingencies for the move meant that only if the score was 7-1 would Jace Peterson take the plate. The condition was met and the third baseman was up. Needless to say, Lovullo was suitably impressed.

For the skipper, Pham’s sacrifice was the ideal team moment on which teams thrive. “This was a moment where it was a teammate loving a teammate to give him an opportunity. That spoke volumes about what that clubhouse feels every single day.” the skipper said in a post-game interview.

Peterson and Pham have never played in the same team before this World Series. They debuted back in 2014 and, interestingly, both of them are D-backs’ midseason trade acquisitions. As Pham remarked, they have given nine years each to the game, and opportunities like this come in very rare.

In a recent interview, Peterson opened up about Pham’s selfless act. “He did an awesome thing that a friend would do. I really can’t say enough about it,” the slugger said. If not for the move, Pham would have become the first-ever MLB player to go 5 for 5 in the World Series. However, he surrendered it without any hint of regret to give Peterson his first opportunity to play in a Fall Classic game.

Peterson became a part of the D-backs roster on Friday after he was dropped from the NLCS. As he stepped on the deck, he leveraged his lefty-righty advantage to make the score. The third baseman remarked that he was completely clueless about Pham giving up his opportunity to score 5 for 5, which has never been accomplished before.

Calling Pham ‘my guy,’ Peterson said that he would do anything for him. Such partnerships and friendly moments give gravity to the World Series and strike a chord with the audience. Pham’s sacrifice for Peterson is one such moment that will always be fondly remembered.
