Tonight, the Toronto Blue Jays will host the Seattle Mariners at the Rogers Center for Game 1 of the American League Championship Series that begins at 8:03 p.m. ET. The final 26-man rosters were officially released, and Toronto added the veteran arms of Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt for the long series ahead. But the biggest story is about who isn’t on that list.

Bo Bichette, who finished second with a .311 batting average, just after Yankees captain Aaron Judge, wasn’t in that 13-man roster. Bichette’s season ended while playing against the Yankees in early September after a collision with Yankees catcher Austin Wells. And he hasn’t played since 6th September with a knee injury.

Bichette tried running the bases on Saturday for the first time since his injury, and he wasn’t fully ready, which made him out of the roster with Justin Bruihl and Tommy Nance, who made the spot for Scherzer and Bassitt. And before his final year of free agency, it can cost him a Goodbye from the Blue Jays, the only organization he knows.

MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson discussed the tough situation on TSN. “This might be the end of the road for him in Toronto,” Matheson stated bluntly. “It’s his last year under team control with the only organization he’s ever known, and they’ve got one chance to get him to the World Series.” So what’s next?

“So I don’t think Bichette is close right now. He has 12 more days to be ready for a potential World Series,” Matheson predicted. “But you’re also talking about defense with Bo Bichette. Can he go side-to-side, or is he a DH? Those are two very, very different rosters for the Blue Jays.” However, the emotional weight of this possibility is massive because Bo and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. represent the heart of this team.

They drafted together in 2016, rose through the minor leagues together, and share the same goal. So, thinking Bo may have played his last game as a Toronto Blue Jay is “strange to think of too because we associate Bo, just like Vladdy, with the Blue Jays, only the Blue Jays. And this is what they’ve dreamed of for years and years, Vladdy and Bo, they want to win a World Series together. But unless they get to the World Series, this might be it for Bo,” Matheson added.

While Bichette’s future hangs in the balance, the Blue Jays’ present focus is seven-game ALCS. And the same goes for the Seattle Mariners as well.

The ALCS roster changes

The Seattle Mariners recently added ace pitcher Bryan Woo and utilityman Miles Mastrobuoni to their roster after coming from an exhausting 15-inning Game 5 ALDS win over the Detroit Tigers. Woo is a first-time All-Star this season and has a 15-7 record with a 2.94 ERA and 198 strikeouts over 186 regular-season innings. The 25-year-old pitcher has been sidelined since Sept. 19 because of pectoral inflammation. Woo and Mastrobuoni are playing in the places of Luke Raley and Ben Williamson.

On the other hand, the Blue Jays’ ace Kevin Gausman will get the ball in Game 1, and Rookie sensation Trey Yesavage follows in Game 2 same as the ALDS, with Shane Bieber slated for Game 3.  The real difference-makers could be Max Scherzer is the likely Game 4 starter with his immense postseason experience. And Chris Bassitt will work from the bullpen and will be ready to provide three or four innings of relief whenever needed.

And while Bichette isn’t on the roster, three-time Gold Glove winner Andrés Giménez will play in his position. Though his bat isn’t as productive as Bo he hit a solid .267 with two RBIs and a stolen base against the Yankees.
