Not every big paycheck guarantees dominance on the field, and not every seasoned pro can outshine the rising stars. When the Nationals’ millionaire baseman openly acknowledges being outclassed by a much younger teammate, it’s a reality check wrapped in humility. The game doesn’t care about contracts—only performance speaks. And right now, a 25-year-old is making all the noise.

Nathaniel Lowe can do pretty much everything on the baseball field, but his one fear came across him this spring training. And when asked about this, Lowe’s reaction does the talk.

During an interview with Foul Territory, the interviewer asked him if there was any pitcher that he felt put him on the back foot. “I mean, for Ferrer. Ferrer, I stood behind I didn’t want to get into the batter’s box, you know,” answered Nathaniel Lowe.

Well, rightly so.

Everybody should be scared of pitchers who can throw 98 mph sinker and can spry fastball at will. In the 2024 season, Jose Ferrer appeared in 31 games and had a 1-0 win-loss record. Over the 32 innings he pitched in total, he had 25 strikeouts with an ERA of just 3.38. He would have achieved even better numbers had he not gotten injured, which cost him a big portion of the season, and the team put him on the 60-day IL.

Jose Ferrer was seen in a minor league game making a rehab appearance. Ferrer did make his 2025 spring training appearance in 3 games where he had two strikeouts and an impressive WHIP of 0.33. If Ferrer can carry this form into the regular season and stays healthy, the Nationals might just have their next bullpen nightmare in the making.

If a seasoned pro like Nathaniel Lowe is hesitant to face Ferrer, what hope do the rest have? With a sinker that defies logic and a fastball that borders on unfairness, Ferrer isn’t just another arm—he’s a problem.

Nathaniel Lowe shines as Nationals’ first base upgrade with power potential

But Lowe’s inclusion in the Washington Nationals cannot be ignored in any sense. He didn’t just fill a hole at first base—they upgraded to a Gold Glove powerhouse who actually knows how to hit. Nathaniel Lowe isn’t here to take pitches for fun; he’s here to make pitchers regret throwing them. With a disciplined eye and power waiting to explode, Washington might have just landed one of the most underrated bats in the league.

Since entering the MLB, Lowe has showcased elite talent at the plate. He consistently demonstrates patience and confidence in taking pitches. He also has a very high walk rate in the last 3 out of his 4 seasons in the majors. Lowe had a strong 2022 season, blasting 27 home runs. However, his power numbers dipped in 2024, as he managed only 16 homers.

Many say that he has been a massive upgrade over Dom Smith and Joey Gallo.

If Lowe’s bat catches fire like his defense already has, the Nationals won’t just have an upgrade—they’ll have a game-changer. Dom Smith and Joey Gallo walked, so Lowe could run, and by the looks of it, he’s sprinting toward All-Star territory.
