Achieving history is difficult, but just falling short of it is painful. Shohei Ohtani has been accomplishing historic feats in recent years, with his top performances as a two-way phenom. This has earned him a place among elite players. During the Los Angeles Angels’ most recent game, Ohtani, the two-way phenom, fell one step short of another historic achievement. This caused fans to react, lamenting as the Japanese star got so close, but just missed it.

Ohtani recently recovered from a batting slump and looks to be getting into better form. Unfortunately for the two-way phenom, he was unable to achieve this historic feat, and fans felt his pain.

Shohei Ohtani was a home run short of being the first starting pitcher to hit the cycle

As an elite two-way talent, Shohei Ohtani has the ability to change the game on both sides. Most recently, he almost became the first player to hit for the cycle while also being the starting pitcher. In the bottom of the 8th inning, he had hit a single, double, and triple, only needing a home run to complete it. In the bottom of the 8th, Ohtani smashed a big hit that looked like the home run he needed but ended up being caught out at the warning track. FOX Sports: MLB shared a Tweet emphasizing just how close the two-way star was.

In a Tweet, they said, “Just inches away from history 😱Shohei Ohtani needed a home run to become the first starting pitcher to hit for the cycle, and the ball was caught at the warning track.”

Unfortunately, Ohtani fell short of the cycle, but he was able to help the Angels win a close 8-7 game. They beat the Athletics for the third game in a row to win a crucial home series that started with a loss. But the two-way phenom hit for the cycle earlier in his career and made history on that day as well.

Ohtani was the first Japanese MLB player to hit for the cycle

On June 13th, 2019, Shohei Ohtani achieved history by hitting the cycle for the first time. By doing so, he became the first Japanese MLB player to hit for the cycle in history. This was a massive achievement for the Angels’ star as he showed off his immense batting ability. On the day, he even helped the Angels win that game 5-3 against the Tampa Bay Rays.
