One of the most legendary rivalries is that between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. Their 1999 ALCS showdown was particularly iconic with the Yankees taking the victory. A former Red Sox shortstop shared his comments on the loss, with ex-shortstop Derek Jeter offering a rebuttal.

Derek Jeter called Nomar Garciaparra a sore loser for his comments on the 1999 ALCS
In his docuseries, ?The Captain?, Derek Jeter revisits pivotal moments and memories from his career. In episode 3, he talks about 1999, in particular the ALCS showdown against the Red Sox. Former Boston star Nomar Garciaparra said that the Boston-based team was better, but couldn?t win the series. In response, Jeter said that all losers say the same thing.?

In the documentary, Garciaparra said, ?They didn?t truly believe they were just better than us that year. It wasn?t they believed they were better. Sometimes you?re like, ?eh we lost, yeah they were better?. We, we didn?t lose to the better team, but we weren?t just good enough to win this series.? In response to this, Jeter didn?t hold back, saying, ?That?s what losers say. Every loser says we had a better team but we didn?t play as well. So, uh, sorry Nomar, we had a better team man.??

This reply by Jeter solidifies his stance on winning being everything. The Yankees went on to win the series and have bragging rights over the Red Sox, who were still suffering from the ?Curse of the Bambino? at the time. Furthermore, they took it one step further and won the World Series.?

In 1999, by beating the Red Sox in the ALCS and then winning the World Series, the Yankees won their 25th title. They became the first team to do so in MLB history. Furthermore, they denied their bitter rivals the chance of breaking the curse apparently caused by Babe Ruth. It was a massive victory that solidified the Yankees? dominance during the 90s.?
