MLB world lost a gem on December 1. One of the greatest pitchers in MLB history, Gaylord Perry, took his last breath and bid farewell to the world and has left the sporting world devastated. Perry had many accolades for his star-studded 22-year-long baseball career with eight different teams.

Perry was one of the very few baseball players who did not have any controversy throughout his big league career. With a career that spanned over two decades; the late San Francisco Giants legend will be a big miss for the baseball community. However, a relief since then is that he left this human world peacefully at his home in Gaffney.

Gaylord Perry: The Ancient Mariner

A consistent workhorse, Perry achieved everything while playing in the ballparks. He also had an infamous nickname, ‘Ancient Mariner.’ Perry won his 300th game on May 6, 1982, becoming the first pitcher to win 300 games after Early Wynn did the same in 1963.

Even though he stopped playing the game after his retirement, the MLB Hall of Famer always remained close to the game of baseball. And when needed, he even advocated for baseball to make an interesting game. He once discussed that “The trouble with baseball is that it is not played the year round.

Perry, in his third year of eligibility, got elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991. Furthermore, he is also the first-ever pitcher to have won the ‘Cy Young Award’ for both the American and National Leagues.

The loss of a great saddened the country

Also known as the ‘master of spitball’, he was famous for being notorious while doctoring baseballs. Even if he wasn’t, he made batters think that he was doctoring the balls to make them suspicious of him. To this date, he and his brother Jim Perry are the only brothers in MLB history to win the Cy Young Award.
