Yankees vs. Mets brawl: Is this passion or just plain embarrassing for New York baseball fans?

Is Martin Scorsese directing the Subway Series? While it is New York’s premier series – the temperatures have never been higher. With the New York Yankees getting completely swept by the Mets, there’s a growing sense of changes within the Big Apple. But alas, it wasn’t taken lightly by fans, visible during the June 23 game when both sets of enthusiasts indulged in a chaotic brawl.

This season has seen the New York Mets and the Yankees go on a wildly different journey. In a classic rabbit and turtle story, the Yanks leaped ahead during the season’s initial phase, but now, the Mets have caught on, which doesn’t sit well with the Bronx fanbase. They have habitually considered the Mets as a “younger brother”, and this led to a recent brawl, leaving the baseball world appalled.

In a video that’s purported to be after Tuesday’s 3-2 Mets win, some people wearing Yankees and Mets jerseys were seen fighting each other. The opposing fans indulged in physical altercations, while a Yankees fan was spotted connecting a right hook to a Mets fan’s face. Moreover, this chaotic scene unraveled rather quickly as multiple fans started grappling with each other.

The fight went on for some time until two stadium staffers decided to show up. While the fans tried to talk to the worker, he ushered everyone away. As the spat came under control, it showcased the sheer passion and frustration that has been raging within the Yankees fanbase. At present, the Bronx Bombers’ fanbase’s dissatisfactions are high – and so are their manager’s, with Aaron Boone’s recent comments reflecting this sentiment.

As the video immediately went viral, it didn’t get a good reception, with many shocked at the fans’ conduct and wondering what’s happening in New York right now.

Have an interesting take?

Although the Yankees fans are known for their passion, this fight may have crossed a few lines. It gave rivals a chance to troll the Bronx Bombers. “If only the actual Yankees fought as hard in this Subway Series,” said a user. That has been a common complaint with the New York Yankees this season; the team looks to have completely checked out after a recent bad stretch. And this lack of fight has affected the fanbase’s psyche.

“Yankee fans have always been unruly and aggressive for no reason, just sad,” wrote another fan. The Yankee Nation has always consistently supported its team. The stadium being filled with 40K+ fans for 10+ consecutive games is evidence of that. But this behavior has left a sour taste in most baseball fans’ mouths. After all, this is just a game, does it really deserve such aggression?

“That dude fight a girl?” one commenter noted. The fight escalated when a male fan wearing pinstripes tried to push one of the female combatants. Eventually, that led to multiple Mets fans joining the fray to fight back the Yankees fanbase. And it’s also visible in the clip that those female fans, too, were a part of this big Subway Series battlefield.

“I thought only Phillies fans acted like this?” commented another user. So how did the Philadelphia Phillies catch an astray here? Well, just like the New York Yankees, the Phillies too are known for their unending support for the team. In fact, the City of Brotherly Love’s team is known as Fightin’ Phils. So one can imagine how aggressive their fanbase could be.

“This is embarrassing,” admitted one baseball lover; a take that resonated with multiple fans. After all, fighting over a team’s loss isn’t something that is looked up to. There will always be the next Subway Series, and after all, winning is much more rewarding than throwing punches. So, as it stands, the Yankees and the Mets’ rivalry has just gotten stronger. For the first time since 2013, the King of the Queens are the emperors of New York.

Could the Bronx Bombers change this status quo soon? What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
