After dominating the entire season, the New York Mets are failing when it matters the most. First, they lost the NL East to their arch-rivals, Atlanta Braves, and now, the Mets have also lost their first game of the wild card round. That too, with having Max Scherzer from the mound.

Earlier during the 2021-22 free agency, Max Scherzer signed a three-year contract for a whopping $130 million. With a player as big as Scherzer, the Mets fans expected the future Hall of Famer to dominate the game against the Padres. However, things went badly for the Mets, as Scherzer chose to have one of his worst starts against the Padres.

Max Scherzer conceded four home runs against the San Diego Padres

The first wild card game was nothing but a nightmare for the New York Mets and Max Scherzer. Not once, twice, or thrice, but the Mets ace got hammered with four home runs on Friday. The Mets pay $43.3 million a year to Scherzer, and instead of getting a good start, the Mets are getting one of the worst starts of the entire season.

“Of course, I am disappointed. Baseball can take you to the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. This is one of the lowest of lows,” Scherzer said during the post-game presser.

“This is going to be a late night for me…,” Scherzer added. “I thought I made the adjustment to get me right. Tonight, I don’t know why the fastball ran. I don’t know why I didn’t have my good fastball, the way I can usually pitch and locate.”

Will the New York Mets bounce back in the remaining two games?

The third will not be even an option if the New York Mets lose the second game tonight against the Padres. Considering it is a do-or-die game for the Buck Showalter-led team would do everything to avoid the humiliation of losing the wild card series.

After Max Scherzer, once again, the Mets have their best starter Jacob deGrom from the mound in the second game. Only time will tell whether deGrom will hold the Padres’ offense or it will be all over for the Mets.
