The Diamondbacks closed out the 2025 season at 80-82, and for the second consecutive season, they’re without a playoff berth. The club dropped its season finale to the San Diego Padres, 12-4. The team was right on pace, in the thick of the NL wild card race down to the final weekend of the season. However, five straight losses tore their playoff hopes. The Diamondbacks were still alive till Friday evening, but the loss to the Padres, paired with the Reds’ win in the same span, made things worse.

As crushing as it is for Arizona, Ken Kendrick’s disappointment at this season surely outweighs it. That level of disappointment often leads to some major reevaluations.

However, the front office has not yet finalized a date for their end-of-season review meeting. As reported by Arizona Sports 98.7’s John Gambadoro, Kendrick is extremely disappointed in the results.

He reportedly stated, “I have never been more disappointed in a season than this one because our expectations were so high.” Apparently, across the last two games, the Diamondbacks were outscored, having no impact on the postseason picture. They earned a +6 run differential over 162 games.

And so consequently, under the most scrutiny was manager Torey Lovullo. Although it’s customary for any MLB manager, for Lovullo, his recent remarks indicated uncertainties about his future in Arizona. “I’m the manager of the baseball team once it hits the dugout. Once it’s in the dugout, I can make baseball decisions. When it comes to personnel things, when it comes to the finer working dynamics inside of rotations and lineups, yes, I have a seat at the table, but there are open discussions.”

He also addressed that no one has yet approached him in terms of whether he would be back in 2026 or not. Lovullo’s postgame availability made a major revelation that he has zero to no control over in-game decisions. Any change in the front office or manager seems very unlikely, given how much of Arizona’s struggles were out of Lovullo’s hands.

How did things go so wrong for the Diamondbacks this season?

The Arizona Diamondbacks pushed hard for a .500 or better record. However, that didn’t happen, as they finished the season with an 80-82 record. Majorly because right-hander Brandon Pfaadt couldn’t deliver when it mattered the most.

He struggled mightily on Sunday, giving up three straight singles and two doubles before eventually recording an out. In the same frame, San Diego capitalized with five runs, and the Diamondbacks couldn’t recover the entire night.

And of course, their offense faltered for consecutive games. And on Sunday, when Ketel Marte provided an early spark with a leadoff homer (his 28th of the year), he couldn’t build much after that.

Further, a walk from Jordan Lawlar, followed by a single from Geraldo Perdomo and an RBI groundout from Tim Tawa, snatched the lead from the Diamondbacks.

The only highlight of Sunday night was Perdomo’s milestone. He reached the 100 RBI mark for the first time in his career. It came in the ninth inning with runners on base. After a missed season due to sloppy mistakes, it’ll be worth keeping an eye on if the front office makes any adjustments with the coaching staff, roster, or manager.
